Nice hotel in excellent location

Nice hotel in central Wellington. We had the 2 bedroom apartment which was really nice with spacious lounge, comfortable beds and compact kitchen. The only downside was the bathroom which was a bit small, with a tight corner shower. Overall though, great value hotel in great location.

Has been great in the past .. but now …

Have been here a few times in the past and has been great. Seen this place is now under new management and the quality has definitely deteriorated. Chicken was tough and stringy and the fish burger was just average. Our mains came out while we were still eating our shared entree. Won’t be going back.

Matador Motel

Welcome to Carterton – in the centre of the Wairarapa. The Matador Motel was built in 1976 and like the name suggests the exterior design has a typically Spanish theme. An additional four Superior Studio units were built in 2006. The current owners Cath & Steve Hurley purchased the motels in October 2016. Steve returns to Carterton after an absence of 43yrs. Situated only minutes from Masterton, Greytown, Featherston, Martinborough and a 1.5hr train trip to Wellington.. Carterton prides itself on being a friendly little town that offers a wide range of local attractions and the Matador Motel is just part of that experience. The Matador Motel is situated in the centre of Carterton on High Street and close to pretty much everything. Some of those attractions and locations include: - Take a 600m walk to the railway station and you are only 1.5hrs from the All Blacks or Hurricanes at Westpac Stadium in Wellington. - Carterton Events Centre, numerous pubs and restaurants are an easy 3-7 minute walk. - Paua Shell Factory is a 10 minute walk. - Clareville Hockey Centre is a 3 minute drive. - Greytown and Gladstone are a 7 minute drive. - Masterton is a 12 minute drive. - Mt Holdsworth is a 15 minute drive into the Tararua Ranges. - Martinborough Fair or Toast Martinborough are a 20 minute drive. - Mt Bruce Wildlife Centre is a 35 minute drive. - Castlepoint, Riversdale, Lake Ferry and Palliser Bay are amongst the many other notable places to visit.

It was not a nice experience

Reviewed By kokoko

Had the potential to be quite charming but the guy was-out-the-gate weird. He seems to have some tried and true lines he pulls out for certain customers along the lines of "you must never have been to a guest house/B&B before" - I think this intended to make you feel small and stupid (and himself more important) for unwittingly breaking one of his unspecified rules. It also serves to divert attention/blame from his own failures (for example telling us off for making our own coffee, despite us waiting in the breakfast room for nearly an hour before anyone turned up to actually serve breakfast or blaming us for waking other guests by simply shutting our bedroom door). He shared his political views rather too freely and quickly. He also spoke negatively about his staff and other guests.

Fantastic Oasis

Reviewed By adventureguyNZ

We come to Wellington often and most hotels are fairly similar but not the Intrepid. This hotel has genuine old school service. Very friendly and nothing is a problem. Fresh coffee in the lobby and complimentary fresh OJ and pastries for breakfast. The hotel is dimly lit with a Art Deco theme. Very relaxing and romantic. The rooms are similar, very quiet and the bed is very comfortable. If you are looking for something quiet, relaxing, close to town, Modern Art Deco/ NYC and a little different this is the place to stay. Thanks Team, we will be back.

Value for Money

Reviewed By xpressoholic

Could not fault the service at reception, very helpful, welcoming and friendly staff. Room was well presented, nice bathroom, good space. Great being able to control temperature in room. Although we had an internal room it was cleverly decorated so it didn't feel closed in. Would have helped if there had been some instructions on how to use the tv,couldn't get any connection at all and there were some random control panels on the wall which seemed to have no purpose. The room was comfortable, clean and value for Money, the bed was comfortable but very high, at 5ft tall I really struggled to get onto it and it will probably put me off returning. However I would definitely recommend this hotel for less vertically challenged folk!
