I have taken the 2 day steeps clinic twice, Once in 2012 with Gavin, and again in 2021 with Steve M. Steve and Gavin are both incredible skiers and instructors, who pushed me of my comfort zone (but within my abillity) to improve my skiing, both technically and mentally. Their knowledge of the terrain at Whistler Blackcomb is very deep. I have been skiing here since the 70's, and they both took me on lines that I had never skied. Some because I did not know about them, others because I did not feel I was up to the task. My recent class I had luck on my side, and had back to back powder days with lift line priority. My epic app tells me we rode 56 chairs in 2 days. I highly recommend the 2 day steeps clinic, it is a great way to improve your skills and your knowledge of the terrain at WB.

We enrolled our 3 and 5 year old in the 5 day ski camp at the Blackcomb base. We also had friends who had a 3 and 7 year old who did the same. Our kids had both skied since they were age 2. Both had gone through several series of lessons at our local resort before this 5 day camp. Overall, we were happy with the program and only have a few minor negative comments that I'll get to below. Each day we dropped off the kids at the Blackcomb base area at 8:30. There were snacks waiting for the 3 year old inside and the 5 year old met his instructor out front. The full day lessons allowed mom and dad plenty of time to explore the mountains and have nice kid free lunches. The 3:15 pick up left some time for us to ski as a family if we desired to do so. We loved getting the emails with the GPS data so we could see our kid's daily travels and stats. Both of our kids improved, however the 3 year old made huge leaps and is now a level 3. We occasionally randomly ran into the kids as we skied around the mountain and at Rendezvous for lunch. They were always happy to see us but were fine going back with their instructors after a quick hello. The camp tends to discourage mid day visits as it can make other kids sad, wondering where their parents are. Our 5 year old skied Whistler 1 day and rode the peak to peak gondola. He got passport stamps at each lift he visited. We were amazed that our 3 year old did not have a potty accident all week. The kids have their own separate lunch areas at the various lodges around the resort and could pick their own meals. Had this camp not been so good and well organized, I think our entire trip would have been less pleasant since it is pretty challenging to ski with 2 young kids at a resort this size. Now to the critiques. Our 5 year old was skiing some blue runs before we arrived. I provided what I felt was a fairly detailed assessment of his abilities at check in. At the end of the first day I was thrilled to hear my 3 year old had been up the gondola and skied up high were it was sunny and the snow was better. I then found out that our 5 year old spent his entire first day riding the magic chair down low. I spoke with his coach and the supervisor and conveyed my displeasure. They assured me he would ski up higher the next few days and he did. Both mountains feature playgrounds for the kids to explore. Unfortunately they seemed to be closed every day. Our 3 year old went to the magic castle on Blackcomb 1 day. Unfortunately, our 5 year old did not get taken to the castle because he was skiing Whistler the one day it was open. I don't know why he wasn't taken to the tree fort at Whistler. This made for a rather sad kid at times as he kept asking when he would get to go. It did not seem that much effort was made to keep these facilities open and yet they are highlighted on the promotional video. Also, I would say that Whistler seemed to have the better learning facilities as compared to Blackcomb. They have an entire learning center with several magic carpets and terrain features at the gondola mid station. This could mean snow when its raining at the base in some situations. We were staying at Blackcomb but if we were to do it again, I think we'd opt for Whistler. My 5 year old improved but just slightly and his instructor didn't seem to have any ideas to get him to progress to more parallel turns. Also, his instructor did not provide much feedback on his report card. It was actually verbatim as our friend's 7 year old, complete with identical minor errors, so I think she just treated it like a form letter. The 5 year old cried at drop off a few days and his instructor did not do much to comfort him or assist us in leaving for the day. Again, the 5 year old had fun after a few morning sobs, and we'd definitely put him in the camp again. We were just hoping for more improvement after 5 days with an instructor at a world class resort, as he had been steadily improving with his lessons at our local hill. We would definitely recommend this camp and will be back in future years.
