Gammelstad Church Town

Of Sweden's 71 original church towns, only 16 are left today. The majority of these have been reduced to a remnant. Gammelstad has the country's largest and best preserved church town with 408 cottages comprising 553 rooms. The church town presumably arose from a combination of several factors: the long distances, merchants' needs for storage and accommodation at the marketplace, the church stables and last but not least the population's duty to attend church regularly. Gammelstad Church Town was put on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 7 December, 1996. Visit Gammelstad Visitor Center for more information. Visitor Center offers information, exhibition, slideshow room, souvenirshop, audioguides and guided tours of Gammelstad Church Town.

Nice library and perfect spot to work, with the best view. There are some exhibitions and some rooms for theater/concerts. The program is always very intense, worth a visit in the webpage to check what they have during the week. The restaurant/bar is very nice and the cafe on the bottom floor has great pancakes and coffee.

Nederlulea Kyrka

Historically unique place. On UNESCO's World Heritage List. The medieval church is fantastic and the surrounding church town which consists of more than four hundred small cottages has an exciting history. I recommend that you book a guided tour. Many old traditions are still maintained and really interesting to learn about. You can book tours at the Visitors center just behind the church or at Tourist Information in Kulturens Hus in Luleå City.
