The 7 best Pensions in Kerala, India

May 7, 2023 Weston Hennigan

In this lush, tourist-friendly southern state, positioned between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats, beaches, waterfalls, rice paddies and verdant green hills create a postcard-perfect landscape. Houseboats traverse its many waterways, providing an intimate look at its rural terrain. Rejuvenation programs through Ayurveda (alternative, natural medicine) are popular here; the cool June and mid-October monsoon seasons are considered ideal for healing therapies.

Windermere River House

Windermere River House is the epitome of calm. It sits on two acres of lush garden right on the banks of the Periyar River, and the loudest sound you’ll hear is the splash of water or the call of a bird. The evergreen forests that surround it host some of the most diverse ecosystems in the world, waiting to be explored. The River House echoes a stately old Colonial bungalow. The rooms are large, with a large common area with soaring cieling and furniture that been customized and handcrafted on site, following the old traditions. The common spaces are thoughtfully arranged to balance camaraderie with privacy, and the home-styled meals are fashioned from the bounty of the land, with a little help from our own kitchen garden. We specialize in solitude, long walks, quiet boat-rides in the sunset, a pool overlooking the water, leisurely yoga sessions and dinner under the stars. Take a few days to relax and unwind or to explore birds at Thattekad bird sanctuary.

Little taste of heaven in God’s Own Country

We completely echo all previous positive comments about Windermere River House. We stayed for three nights and were treated to some of the best hospitality and service we’ve ever had in any country. The food was fresh, prepared with care with reference to our tastes and timings and served beautifully by Tony . Our room was spotless and we really enjoyed cooling off in the pool after our trips out with our birding guide. We especially appreciated the warm welcome from owner John and his family when we first arrived, and the many subsequent conversations we had with Neville exploring aspects of Indian culture and philosophy. We really didn’t want to leave!

Great Accommodation

Rooms are very clean. The building is new so nothing is broken and everything is in good working order. Our room was on the first floor and had a view of the beach. There is a common area with sofas if you weant to relax out of your room. The manager lives in the building and is there all the time so if you want help advice or assistance in organising things he is very willing to help. The only negative point is that it is not close to a good restaurant so if you need a meal it is a tuc tuc ride away costing approx 80-90 rupees. but it is near one of the nicest and cleanest beaches where you can swim in the Arabian Sea

Beautiful house and lovely family.Mr Kuttappan and his family treated my family like thier own relatives and made our stay comfortable. Mrs Sujata cooked delicious food using the spices grown in their own land. Location is peaceful and not very far from town. Here you can visit river in the valley, and hanging bridge and ripples waterfall are near by and the roads are awesome. After a lot of enquiry about stay in Munnar i feel like i have made a right choice staying here, overall we had amazing time. Thank you Mr Kuttappan and Mrs Sujata.

Property is ideal for friends /family get togethers.. Plenty space and pool is maintained clean. When booking is done ensure the property owners are well informed about your arrival and duration of stay. There are many unprofessional tour operators taking booking and once we have paid the advance they never follow up. For a better stay directly contact the property care takers or the owners as soon as the booking is done.

This is a long overdue review. I stayed at Jeen Wilson's Homestay sometime in February 2016 and was there for 2-3 days. I had a wonderful stay there with a friend. The place was cozy and comfortable, and the whole family was super nice. Highly recommend it if you are visiting the area. Thanks again!
