Swan Hotel by Greene King Inns

The Swan Hotel Alton near Farnham and Basingstoke, is located in the Hampshire town of Alton with easy access via the A31 making it an ideal base if visiting Farnham, Aldershot, Winchester, Basingstoke. The Swan Hotel dates back to the 16th century and was a main stage on the old London-Southampton coaching route, and the Swan Hotel has been catering handsomely to passing traffic since the 16th century. Tradition has it that the poet Edmund Spenser, Sir Francis Drake, Queen Elizabeth I and the Earl of Essex all broke their journeys here. Another famous guest was Lord Nelson. Our guests include many people of sense and sensibility - that is to say, devotees of Jane Austen, who make their pilgrimage to her cottage in the Chawton, where Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice, were both written, during their stay with us. The cottage now is a popular tourist attraction and museum dedicated to Jane's life and work. Today the Swan Hotel is popular with locals and travellers alike and along with the new refurbishment is an excellent base for exploring the surrounding area.

Great hotel, friendly staff, would recommend

We stayed here at the end of April for two nights as part of the Civil War weekend in Alton. The staff on reception were very welcoming upon our arrival and we had no problem checking in, the whole process was very simple. We had booked a family room as one of our children was due to travel with us, but they changed their mind at the last minute so my husband and myself had the family room to ourselves which was incredibly spacious (it would have been spacious even with a child in the room). The room itself was well furnished and very clean and the bed was so comfortable (especially after a day on the battlefield). It was obvious the room and especially the bathroom had been recently refurbished and some of the refurbishments were undertaken quickly due to the odd splash of paint here and there, and the grouting in the bathroom being a bit dodgy in places, but this didn't distract from the quality of the facilities. One thing I must add about the bathroom was the shower, which was amazing! We ate in the restaurant both nights and the food was excellent and very good value for money. There was loads of choice on the menu and the portions were more than substantial, and the choice of drinks available from the bar also a plus. We also enjoyed breakfast both mornings and again, this was lovely. Again, there was quite a bit of choice and the service was excellent. The service on both evenings and at breakfast was also excellent, even though they were fully booked and very busy. We loved our stay and should we be in Alton again in the future, we will definitely be staying again.

Family reunion

We first visited this hotel 4 years ago and didn't pay for our food as it was so bad. My Dad has a theory that lightening doesn't strike twice so we risked it again last week. My elderly parents were staying overnight haven driven up from Dorset. They checked in to their pre booked disabled room. On trying to use the toilet my Dad found that the only way to get off the seat was to hold the heated towel rail. It was an accessible room. They were moved to a disabled room with little apology from the manager. 6 more of us then arrived for dinner. It is a limited menu but they had run out of 2 of the 4 starters and one of our chosen main courses. When the meals did come out 5 of the 8 meals were not what we ordered. The waitress that served was clearly embarrassed but the colleague who had taken the order had not written down what we had said ? It was so bad it was laughable. It was the first time my parents were meeting their Great Granddaughter so we made the best of it. There was no apology or offer of any money from the bill. My parents went down for breakfast the next morning and they both ordered porridge which they said was disgusting. They did speak to the manager about offering a discount re the room mistake but he just said that they had been moved so no discount was forthcoming.

Perfect base for Goodwood

Reviewed By L3708FPrichardj

Excellent. Nice room with facilities (iron and ironing board, fridge etc) that put most hotels to shame. A couple run it, I didn't see the lady, but I did see Dave, who was very welcoming, very helpful and knowledgeable and who also made a terrific breakfast. Wonderful views from the local area too. Definitely recommended as a place to stay if visiting Goodwood and I will choose this place again for the same reason. I have seen the other reviews and would say this - it's a place to base yourself. You've got flexibility to go in and out, no problem. The week before I went to a far more 'swanky' hotel with my wife to celebrate our anniversary. The tap kept running there, it wasn't tidy, the cleaners didn't clean despite being asked to and the customer service was poor. I mention this because here, despite being their home - in effect - everything worked, it was clean (yes there were a few cobwebs but so what?) and customer service was excellent. I will go back and be happy to do so.

Shockingly Awful - Filthy, Tatty, Unprofessional

Reviewed By Dennis B

We arrived to a disheveled and overheated guy handling check in and basically everything else, at a tatty small bar area. Turned out to be the so-called ‘manager’. Given a key and a vague point in the direction of the stairs, we were left to our trip through a first impression of un cleaned and certainly not recently vacuumed stairs and hallways. Not a great first impression! Entered what is sold as their BEST room in the house, to find an appalling tatty mess. The curtains are a torn tatty and filthy mess (see photos) that are literally coated with thick webs at the top where NO cleaner has ever been. The room has feature timber beams, with a thick layer of dust and fluff plainly on view across them all, plus a dozen long trailing webs from the ceiling above the bed. A disgusting mess, certainly NOT something that you would choose to sleep beneath! So we returned to the bar, no sight of anyone anywhere, trailed around the building inside and out, eventually knocked on the kitchen door and the same disheveled overheated guy, looking uncomfortably sweaty and unwell, appeared again. We explained what we had found and asked if someone from housekeeping was available to get the webs and filthy layers of dust and fluff removed fully. Answer? ‘Oh, OK, I’ll go and sort it out’. Two hrs later we returned to find that someone had obviously been into the room and (I’d guess with a broom) tried to sweep off the beams and snag the many webs, as well as ‘sweep’ the curtains of the webs there! The result you can see in the photos, the bed and carpet covered along with the bedside tables and pillows, in the filthy chunks of dust and fluff plus webs from the beams and ceiling! The whole place was covered. Just disgusting. We went to find the chap, or anyone, but found only a bar lady, who was NOW the only person in the building! She reluctantly came to the room to actually see the shocking state of it all; entirely agreed with us, couldn’t help as ‘nobody is here until the morning to clean stuff’ and agreed that she wouldn’t accept this mess ‘it’s terrible, isn’t it?’ We waited an hour for the (yep, same chap) ‘manager’ to return. Despite our asking the bar lady that he would immediately come to see us in the room, nope - he was wombling around the restaurant area when we tracked him down, to be told by us what we had found, and simply + politely asked ‘what is the proper solution here, what can you actually DO?’ His reply….? ‘Oh, I can offer you a full refund then’. Shocking attitude, shockingly unprofessional, shockingly dirty establishment in every respect (as an aide, in the restaurant where the conversation took place I could plainly see a table that had been used for what appeared to be breakfast (toast, marmalade, half empty orange juice glasses, etc left uncleared at approx 6:00 in the EVENING!) This is a tatty pub masquerading as a hotel, the place is plainly unmanaged and plainly in an appalling state with zero maintenance and zero effort to clean to any reasonable standards. We checked out immediately. The only apology being from the bar lady saying she’s not surprised and hopes we find somewhere ‘decent’. We did, and we will never consider The Anchor Inn in ANY fashion for any stay or meal again in the future. Take warning from my points above and images attached. They tell only a portion of the tale, this establishment should be avoided at ALL costs.
