I bought a furin (wind chime) at the Shinohora Furin Honopo (Honopo = Shop) in Tokyo during my only overseas trip this year. We shot a Peninsula Academy vídeo there where the son of the owner explained that the manufacture of furin was introduced from China by monks to ward off evil (and to know which way the wind was blowing). The soothing sound of these wind bells is supposed to be a symbol of summer in Japan. I had them paint wisteria blossoms in lieu of the usual pink sakura blooms. The honopo (shop) is one of the oldest furin stores in Tokyo, dating back to the Shōwa Period when Hirohito was emperor from December 25, 1926 until his death on January 7, 1989. It was a charming glimpse of old Japan (and a welcome break from the freezing cold outside) that I would recommend to anyone.
