The 7 Best Antique Stores in Hanoi, Vietnam

May 19, 2021 Yuk Petri

The charming Vietnamese capital has aged well, preserving the Old Quarter, monuments and colonial architecture, while making room for modern developments alongside. Hanoi may have shrugged off several former names, including Thang Long, or "ascending dragon," but it hasn't forgotten its past, as sites such as Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum and Hoa Lo Prison attest. Lakes, parks, shady boulevards and more than 600 temples and pagodas add to the appeal of this city, which is easily explored by taxi.

54 Traditions Gallery

We focus on two areas: objects and textiles from the ethnic minority groups in the northern mountains of Viet Nam and in the Central Highlands, and also cultural antiques from the Kinh/Viet (the majority group in Viet Nam) and the cultures that preceded them. We have about 1,000 objects on display at a time, and almost all are for sale. All objects are from Viet Nam, are guaranteed to be as described. All are accompanied by a Fact Sheet of at least 1000 words, giving the details on the people who made the object, materials used, purpose, and probable age. We also have inexpensive prints made from antique woodblocks and jewelry, incorporating small antiques and other objects. We work with numerous museums in VN, USA, and elsewhere. Our price range is very broad, with objects under $20 and over $1000.

If you are in Hanoi visiting this gallery/museum is a must. It is a collection like you will see no where else in this city-- maybe all of Vietnam. A stalwart New Yorker, Dr. Rappoport is the proprietor, collector, gatherer, historian, cultural maven and all around great guy. He has on display authentic (some very very old) textiles, carvings, engravings, prints, wall hangings, clothing, etc. and the knows the story behind each and every item. If you're lucky you can get recruited to his eyeglass distribution program up north-- a great deed and a great way to meet tribal artisans.
