The city is located on Ilha de São Luís (Saint Louis' Island) in the Baía de São Marcos (Saint Mark's Bay), an extension of the Atlantic Ocean which forms the estuary of Pindaré, Mearim, Itapecuru and other rivers. Lovely old historic centre in dire need of some TLC. Old squares, decorations, music all put on by the municipality shows that they’re trying but many dilapidated buildings and homeless people asking for handouts don’t let you forget where you are. That said, food & drink is inexpensive and local folks quite friendly. Sunday market in the main square by the cathedral definitely a highlight with local food, drink and handicrafts accompanied by a local capoeira group doing their thing made it a memorable experience.
