Hilbre Island Nature Reserve

Check tides etc before setting off - I went as part of a group - Cheshire Wildlife Trust. Before the walk started we all took advantage of the public toilets which I have to say were spotless! You have to carry with you everything you need (especially drinks) & wear appropriate gear. This is a long walk out to visit the Islands & you'll be walking over all sorts of terrain with no shelter from the elements. The Seals on the day were squabbling on the sand bank - we could hear them but you did need binoculars to see them properly. There's an abundance of bird life on the waters edge (if you're a Twitcher) and lots of interesting rock pools to go dipping in. Fantastic views of both North Wales & Wirral coast line. There's a Composting Toilet on Hilbre Island but nothing else except uninhabited buildings (used for wildlife recording purposes), forna, flora & fabulous red sandstone! The round property run by Friends of Hilbre does advertise on the information board at the start & at the property regular opening dates throughout the year but it was uninhabited on our visit. Lots of people take their dogs on this walk & allow them to run free but they have to be on leads on the actual island. The Lifeguards are on duty all day. Suitable for all ages but you need to be fit LOL

West Kirby Beach

We spent the afternoon here and absolutely loved it. Walked around the marine first during which jumped down the rocks onto the beach. The beach was so lovely, clean and plenty of space to socially distance which everyone adhered to. Children said its the best day out they’ve had in ages. There are dogs on the beach but I didn’t see any mess, did see some of the prom but just swerved it. Lifeguards up and down the beach too which was nice to see. Will definitely be returning.

West Kirby Museum

The small museum was founded in 1892 but for over a century had its contents locked away and inaccessible except by special appointment or on very rare open days. The St Bridget's Centre was renovated in 2012, and the overhaul of the museum was a key part of the plan, giving it regular opening hours for the first time in its history. The collection contains artefacts discovered on the site from Pre-Norman, Norman, Gothic and Post-Gothic periods. Most notable is the Hog-Back Stone which is testament to the Viking's Christian presence in this location one thousand years ago.

This is a great little museum, that is well worth a visit if you are in the West Kirby area. It is adjacent to the beautiful Church of St Bridget, which is also a lovely building to visit. The flowers were absolutely gorgeous when we were there, last week. The museum is quite small, but well laid out, and a real treasure trove of historic local photographs, documents and artifacts . It is run by friendly and well informed volunteers, who are available to answer any questions you may have. Although I was born and raised in West Kirby, and have always had an interest in history in general, and local history in particular, there are new discoveries being made all the time, and I realized there is a great deal still to learn ! This was my grandson's (12) first visit to England, and he was fascinated by the things he learned about "Grandma's home town" ! We really enjoyed our time at this little hidden gem !
