Matamba bush camp

Situated on a beautiful 400Ha game farm, two and a half hours from Jhb on the main road to Botswana. Matamba has two camping options. Tau Camp, is built in a lovely open woodland, it has only three sites, Drongo, Hornbill and Francolin. These are about 200m apart so are very private. The facilities are rustic but superb, and consist of a thatch family bathroom with shower, flush toilet and Basin, and a separate toilet, there is also an outside shower and toilet built around large trees. Mara's Camp is a private camp for one group only, in a thick woodland with beautiful big trees this is a very special camp. Two outside bathrooms are cleverly designed and blend into the surrounding bush. Both camps are unfenced and game is regularly in and around the campsites. There are Four water holes, a thatch hide and a viewing deck three meters up in a tree. Walking only is permitted, there are four marked trails but over 60 km of sandy tracks, however the wholefarm is open to be enjoyed. There is a large selection of plains game at Matamba is very relaxed, over 300 birds and many beautiful trees and grasses. Matamba is ideal as a weekend break or a stopover on the way to Botswana

Caesar's Bush Palace

Reviewed By HappyDanish - Minneapolis, Minnesota

We went to Caesar's Bush Palace as part of a tour arranged by the Matswani Private Game Reserve, so it was quite a coincidence we visited this place. I felt quite sceptic, when I first heard, it was a kind of mini-zoo for exotic animals that were mistreated by their former owners. We definitely did not come to South Africa to see tigers or go to a zoo with all the nature around!
We got, however, a tour by a very enthousiastic guide, who not only explained a lot about the animals, but who also was able to communicate her love of the animals and the need for a place like this in South Africa. Very impressive.
Most animals looked very happy and although the cages are not that big or fancy, they seem to have a good life there. They told us also that they regularly get a vet to look at them, especially as many of the animals need treatments or prophylactic vitamin treatments due to malnutrition or deficiencies in their early life. There was a hyena expressed stereotype behavior, which of course is not a good sign. The guide, however, did not try to hide this, but explained that they were aware of this and hoped to find another hyena or in other ways try to get this animal back to more natural behavior.
It is sad, that there is a need for a place like this, but go and visit it, when you are around and get both a good experience and support the people behind the Caesar's Bush Palace.

Eventieria

Reviewed By Produsa - Johannesburg, South Africa

On arrival, management are keen to point out that this is a rehabilitation
centre. However whilst not in a position to challenge this, its seems that there are three types of operations. Rehabilitation, Breeding and Capture/Cage (for viewing). Leaving aside any judgements, of which there are very many, it's generally not possible in nature to get this close to these kinds of animals. To look directly into their eyes and listen to the soft sounds you would almost never get the opportunity to experience. This "connection" can also be heart wrenching, and it's not for people that are not able to control these emotions.
Of course the bigger picture within which this type of facility can operate also needs consideration. Rehabilitation and Breeding (for genetic purposes) can be welcomed. So when you pay your money as entry and therefore supporting this business you need to clearly understand what you are contributing towards. And for me its not entirely clear. Personally i enjoyed my visit, but it has left an emotional scar. Not only regarding this facility but for the damage that we as humans continue to inflict upon our environment and also therefore our fellow inhabitants who do not have the "voice" we can recognise and listen to as equal to our own.
