Cárquere, the Pantheon of the Resendes lineage, has a few elements from its original Romanesque structure: a tower and a crevice on the Pantheon. Here we find one of the most peculiar themes in the Portuguese Romanesque style: the beak-heads. Although the Church's interior grew based on a medieval structure, it is the result of the Gothic and Mannerist interventions that left us the chancel's ribbed vault, as well as the main and north lateral portals. This Monastery is part of the Route of the Romanesque.

The Convent or “Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Cárquere”, you can find in the small village of Resende. This is a classified National Monument. This convent could have been built into the turning of the 13th to the 14th century, still within the Gothic style. It is a small location, but anyhow it is good to make a stop-over and to take some pictures.

This little village on the banks of the Douro seems to be by-passed by most of the big cruise/hotel boats- and I cannot understand why. The village is blessed with hot Springs (said to possess healing qualities as so many of these Springs are). There is a large facility over-looking the Douro designed to let tourists take advantage of the hot Springs. There is a tiled indoor pool with a beautiful view of the Douro, as well as a gym, mud and Turkish baths, vapour treatment and 'vichy massages' (done by a masseuse wearing bathers under a warm shower) available for a few Euros.
This would be a delightful side-excursion on any trip up the Douro- and something a bit different to all the vineyards and Quntas along the valley.
5. Church of Saint Martin of Mouros
The Church of Saint Martin of Mouros, a monument that stands out within the Portuguese Romanesque, is quite impressive due to the robustness of its tower-façade. However, despite its military appearance, it only served religious purposes. Its construction may have been hindered for several years, resulting in the interruption of the original project, which, supposedly, had three naves and whose beginning corresponds to the interior of the tower-façade. Inside, highlight goes to the chancel that suffered major changes in the Modern Period. This monument is part of the Route of the Romanesque.
