Salinas de Maras

The Salinas de Maras is a salt-producing operation in the Inca Sacred Valley, not far from Cusco and Ollantaytambo. It is made possible by a natural hot-water spring that pours out of the side of a mountain. It has been in operation more than 500 years, even before the Incas took over the area. There are a large number of salt pans arranged in terraces down a mountainside and it's "mined" by a collective of families that have been working the salt pans for many generations. It's an awesome thing to witness and fun to walk around. You can even buy the salt the operation produces!

My partner and I visited the Rainbow Mountains and had an incredible day. It's quite a bit higher than Cusco so make sure you drink coca tea or other protections from altitude sickness. Dress warmly and get ready for the best photos of your life!
