The 10 Best Valleys in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan

September 11, 2021 Velvet Champine

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (abbreviated as KP; Urdu: خیبر پختونخوا‬‎; Pashto: خیبر پښتونخوا‎) is one of the four administrative provinces of Pakistan, located in the northwestern region of the country along the international border with Afghanistan. It was previously known as the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) until 2010, and is known colloquially by various other names. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is the third-largest province of Pakistan by the size of both population and economy, though it is geographically the smallest of four. It comprises 10.5% of Pakistan's economy, and is home to 11.9% of Pakistan's total population, with the majority of the province's inhabitants being Pashtuns, Hazarewal, Chitrali, and Kohistanis. The province is the site of the ancient kingdom Gandhara, including the ruins of its capital Pushkalavati near modern-day Charsadda. Originally a stronghold of Hinduism and Buddhism, the history of the region was characterized by frequent invasions under various Empires due to its geographical proximity to the Khyber Pass.

Kaghan is a big sized valley that starts at Balakot and ends at Babusar Pass. This area, being in Himalayan rain belt, gets lot of rain in summers and lot of snow in winters. The valley is lush green and full of conifer trees. The valley height at start point Balakot is 3200 ft and it gradually, over a distance of 130 km, rises to 13700 ft at Babusar Pass. Important towns in the Valley are Naran, Kaghan, Paras, Batakundi, Jhalkhad and Mahandri. There are numerous lakes in the mountains along Kaghan valley, however, Saiful Mulook, Lulusar and Dodipat sar are more famous. Their are numerous beautiful small valleys that originate from the main valley. Kunhar River drains the valley all the way. At 17360 ft, Malika Parbat is the hightest peak in the area. Kaghan Valley is a very busy place during May to July and the rates of everything are very high. However, this is also the best season to visit the valley. Not a place to be missed.

I visited chitral city and kalash(boomboraat)and was stunned to see its calm tranquility and beauty. The roads to kalash are for tractor only as cars and jeeps frequently broke on it. The beautiful costumes of kalash women and thier dances are awesome.the flora of chitral is breathtaking to see.i didnt like the local cuisine, thanks God that other kpk cuisine were available. The chugha(emboreidery jackets)can be bought in chitral city for 10000rupees. The people of chitral are humble and loving.the kalash drink a whisky made from mulberry fruit. Chitral is a place to go again and again.

On towards Dir road is metalled, good for cars (105 km, 3 hours).  10 km short of Dir, we turn right, (Baab-e-Kumraat). Sheringal (35 km, 2 hours) road is broken metalled road. Sheringal to Thal, dirt track worse, but travelable with car (20 km, 1 1/2 hours). Dirt track leading to Kumrat Valley is aound 30 km, is more difficult. (doable with regular 2WD; 4WD is better option).  Kumrat Valley has a flowing river, relatively wide valley, with rocky mountains, and lower slopes are covered with evergreen trees: the bare peeks have beautiful golden shine in the after noon.  The track is not dangerous....doable during day or night, and any weather. Fuel is available up to Thal.  A beautiful water fall over a single large rock, in Kumrat is popular tourist destination. Water crossing towards the end of Kumrat is the final interest. Jungle tracks and meadows abound, are good for walking along.  Hotels, Tent Camps, Free Camping areas are available all along the dirt track. The people are very friendly and will help any one and all. Sleeping in own tent is a very good option.  The weather is mild... there is snowfall in the winter, but the road remains open. Bumburet Valley

Reviewed By 436kazia - Orlando, United States

This is the main kalash valley, & the biggest one, it is about 2 hours from Ayun Village by jeep or 3.5 hours from Chitral. The road to the Valley is dirt/rocky & jeepable with narrow turns at some places. Once you reach the valley it opens up & is beautiful with river running on one side & lusg green fields/high mountains /fruit trees & alpine trees. There is a good Museum about Kalash culture, it charges minimal Rs. 5 for Pakistani & Rs.2000 for Non pakistani, & also charges extra to take pictures. PTDC motel is the BEST option IF one intends to stay over night which offers clean rooms & good food. Unfortunately due to the invasion of NON LOCALS with beards the Kalash culture is under severe threat & is hanging by a thin thread. Kalash people are very open & welcoming, there are several gift shops in the valley which sells very colourful & Beautiful local hand made handicraft at very reasonable price. There is a temple as well as well as centuries old grave yard worth seeing, as well as typical Kalash homes are worth seeing. HIGHLY RECOMMED to go visit BEFORE THIS CULTURE WHICH IS FOUND NO WHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD DISAPPEARS.
