A very living tradition. Every night all year round, a long, muffled signal sounds over the center of Ystad. One pitch for each quarter in each direction. It is the Tornväktaren in the tower of St. Mary's Church who proclaimed that everything is calm in the city according to a several hundred year old tradition. Today, Tornväktaren is the city's symbol and still watches over the city.

I just happened to read about Ales Stenar a few days before departing on a trip from Vestfold, Norway to Poland via ferry from Ystad, Sweden. Ales Stenar is about 15 kms east of Ystad, close to a cozy little fishing village called Löderup. It is a brisk uphill walk from Löderup to the top of a large open meadow where the stones are situated. When you reach a certain point, you see the outline of the stones against the sky. Very majestic. The vast meadow reaches southwards to high cliffs that tumble down to the Baltic Sea. Several folks showed up shortly before sundown to get the ultimate Ales Stenar experience. It is a powerful place and a must see if you are in the area.

The Abbey in Ystad was founded in 1267 by Franciscan munks called Grey Friars. It is the best kept Abbey in Sweden together with Vadstena Abbey. Today it houses the cultural history museum of Ystad: The Abbey in Ystad. The Abbey in Ystad offers exhibitions and activities all year around. The medieval church built in Brick Gothic style is the oldest structure and is open for museum visitors. I had to come to Ystand for 5 days to avoid overstaying my welcome in a nearby country. Ystad is a small town, and although I am a big Wallander fan, I was worried about filling up the time in cold and wintry weather here. No problem. I went to the Visitor’s Center and the staff there did a great job helping me plan a fun time here. My friend and I took the Wallander self-guided walk, visited the Aler Stenir (amazing!), toured the film studio and art museum next to the tourist information center (both well worth the time and effort), and briefly considered a day trip to Bornholm but had to rule it out since it would have been going back to Denmark. The best suggestion made by the staff at the Visitor Center was to try out some local music performances. Following their recommendation, we chose to go to the cute village of Kivik on the Baltic Sea to hear the Blue Bird orchestra at the Kivik Hotel. That turned out to be such great fun—great music and dancing in a beautiful venue. Thank you to everyone at the Ystad Visitor Center for making sure we kept busy and had a great time here. We will be back when the weather warms up!
