A wonderful place to spend a day! The city was designed with beautiful buildings on the street front and hidden courtyards which offer some very interesting secret places. Visit the Mairie and checkout the website for Carouge for possible tours offered in a number of languages. The boutiques are unusual and a bit different from "high" street shops. There is a wide selection of good restaurants and tearooms that will please most. Open air markets are on Wednesday and Saturday mornings and offer more than the usual fresh veg, flowers, etc.

This is a small place not far from downtown Geneva, very easy to get to by bus. They have a very good collection of snakes, lizards, turtles, tarantulas and alligators including poisonous and endangered species. They even have a nursery with a lot of baby reptiles. You can see the place in less than an hour but you can easily spend 2 hours or more here if you want to read about all of the animals. If I remember correctly, it cost about 6 chf. each to get in. If you are a reptile fan, definitely check this place out.

Relatives of ours were visiting Geneva and one of the sites we took them to was the Botanical Gardens. In the city itself; the only problem may be finding a parking spot. Best solution - take a bus. Definitely worth it. So many flowering plants on each of the walkways. Plants and trees are named. Visit the winter garden that is open all the time. It is a great treat for kids who can explore the area. And do not miss the walkway that takes you down to the lake. There are also a few animals: ducks, flamingos, peacocks, deer. Finally, you will find a good restaurant with a nice view. Terraces outdoors. Did not eat there so cannot comment on the cuisine.

Lake Geneva is beautiful in any weather. It is so accessible that it is easy to walk from one side of the lake, cross the river and continue through the old town section. The cruises give stunning views of the Geneva front from a distance.

If your not looking for excitement but just to relax in a lovely environment, visit the Jardin Alpin in Meyrin, just 5 minutes from the Geneva Airport or about 20 minutes outside the centre of town. It accessible just 1minute off the Tram number 14 or 18, getting off at Jardin Alpin, dont go direction of Graviere or Meyrin Cité. As soon as you see Media Market or Franz Carl Weber, exit the tram and just north of those stores is a park, and there you will find this lovely oasis.

La Grange Park is a large public park with huge trees and beautiful landscaping in the city of Geneva right on the Lake. The park was bequeathed to the city by William Favre in 1917.
Make sure you visit the ruins behind Favre’s 18th Century villa of a Roman villa from 50-60 AD. There are 2 theatres in the park but they are only used in the summer.

The Jardin Botanique is a great spot for a nice head-clearing walk after sitting in meetings at the nearby UN buildings. The Alpine Garden is charming with rocks and alpine plants, and there are a few conservatories where you can find lush green plants to cheer up in the middle of winter.

The ethnographic museum has recently re-opened in a new ultra-modern wing. The permanent collection (free entrance) is a rather eclectic assembly of items from different parts of the world (masks, religious artefacts, utensils etc.) arranged by geographical area (Europe, Africa, the Americas etc.). Whilst, the exhibition (entrance fee, currently 9CHF) focuses on a particular theme. Currently, this is Aboriginal art, with some spectacular bark paintings, interesting and poignant photos and contemporary pieces of differing appeal.
Everything is clearly explained and both the building itself and the exhibition space are really impressive.
The permanent collection would be a good stopover on a rainy day, whilst the exhibition depends more on your personal interests. A very worthwhile few hours.

Great Animals in the museum including large groups of Tigers etc. The birds themselves are especially well displayed and a great way to see them.
