The 10 Best Things to do in Vaxholm, Stockholm County

April 23, 2022 Nicolette Lion

Vaxholm is known as the “gateway to Roslagen” because it is a hub for travel to most of the islands in the Swedish archipelago. Vaxholm itself is comprised of about 70 small islands, all of which can be explored on foot. There are shops, restaurants, and cafés for those looking to take a coffee break. For those interested in military history, a ferry runs to the tiny island of Vaxholmen, home to a major 17th century citadel also known as Vaxholm Castle (Vaxholms Kastell in Swedish).

Grinda

Reviewed By Boromir1234 - San Francisco, United States

There are dozens of islands in the archipelago accessible by ferry from Stockholm, and most of them have tons of vacation homes on them. I chose Grinda because it is a nature preserve, which means that visitors can wander anywhere. There is an inn, a couple restaurants, a campground, and rental cottages -- but there are no stores or commerce. This island is for people who like hiking, exploring, and lounging (I considered the water too cold for swimming). It's hard to get lost because the island is only about a mile long. I took Waxholmsbolaget ferries, which stop at tons of islands on the way. I left Stockholm at 8:15 AM, and took the return ferry from Grinda at 4:20 PM. Their site is only in Swedish, but not hard to use once you get the hang of it.

You can see the castle popping through the trees when arriving from Vaxholm. That is quite a sight! The castle is beautifully maintained and is worth the visit.
