Triglav National Park

Triglav National Park is one of the most im¬portant natural treasures of Slovenia. It is named after the sym¬bolic mountain Triglav (2,864 m) and is one of the oldest parks in Europe. The first protec¬tion attempts date back to the year 1906. Thepark covers nearly 84,000 hectares, almost the entire territory of the eastern Julian Alps. The Triglav National Park (TNP) is the only Slovenian national park. The management of the Triglav National Park is the responsability of the Triglav national Park Public Institution, based in Bled. The national park is a model example of successful harmonisation of different interests focused on a common goal: well-preserved nature, landscape and cultural heritage. The values of a national park are a motive and an attractive goal for visitors who respect the exceptional nature and cultural heritage as well as the peace and quiet of the area.

As a nature lover, Triglav Park was on my activities list during my trip in Slovenia. The park is in the Julian Alps, therefore offers the typical beautiful alpine landscape :) There are different paths and you can find information on the official website and at the "ticket office" at the entrance. My friend and I are quite active and we chose a medium path, which was actually very easy, on the way up, we hiked along a small stream, arriving at a waterfall. We had a packed lunch with us, and on the way back, we stopped for a drink in a typical place, which really added to the visit. The park is very well looked after. Nature and photography lovers are going to love this place :)

Mala Osojnica

Climb the peak above Bled which will enthuse you with their magnificent views. Climbing the Mala Osojnica (685 metres) will take about 45 minutes along a steep forest path. The most beautiful views of Lake Bled and its surroundings, the Karavanke, Kamniško-Savinjske Alpe mountain ranges and the Ljubljana basin await you.

Lake Bled

Discover the magic of the lake that attracts travellers from near and far. The current unique shape of the year did not emerge coincidentally. A tectonic hole made by the Bohinj glacier through the years, was once at the location of the present lake. Its path was obstructed by a huge rock which was so persistently scraped that the only thing that remained was the present island. The ice melted and the basin was filled with water, thus Lake Bled emerged, which is in some places up to 30 metres deep and quite popular amongst divers. 19 species of fish live in the lake, including carp, sheatfish and lake trout. Ducks and swans as well as diverse plants also swim and thrive on its surface.

Very picturesque lake so still - great pics with sun out- got bus from Bled to Ribcev Lazto - walked to Ukanc - choice there to get cable car (20euro) to MT Vogel or walk on to see Slap Savica Waterfall. Not much snow so walked to waterfall - bit disappointing as not much water flow despite being early Feb - a long walk but at least there was a bar at falls - walked back on other side of lake the views not as good - care to be taken on footpath - lots of fallen trees - 22km walk but worth it

Vrsic Pass - Julian Alps

At an altitude of 1611 metres, the mountain pass at Vrsic is the highest in the eastern Julian Alps and provides a natural link between the Savska and the Soska valleys. You may wish to have a relaxing cup of coffee or even stay the night at the Ticarjev mountain hut, which is located at the top of the pass. There are five mountain huts on Vrsic offering you rest and refreshment. Just off the main road winding up Vrsic, at an altitude of around 1200 metres rests the Russian chapel. Whilst ascending Vrsic, you can admire the natural rock-carved face of the lovely maiden Ajdovska deklica and a natural rock-window created in the face of the Prisank mountain.

We drove this 25km stretch from Kranjska Gora to Trenta valley at a slow pace, soaking in the glorious views and experiences en route. We spent over 3 hours completing the route with ~50 hairpin bends, armed with a very useful map provided by the friendly Kranska Gora tourist office at the start of this journey (do drop by and ask for the one with the stops marked and attractions labelled). September seems a perfect time to go, with modest traffic (cars and cyclists), place to pul over/park at most stops and favourable weather. Some of the memorable stops included Lake Jasna, the Russian Chapel, the Pagan girl, Postarski Dom (with a clearer view of the face as well, and some interesting WW bunker relics) and the source of River Soca. Fascinating!

Straza Bled

Straza is a smaller hill most suitable for a relaxing walk and summer or winter sport activities. It is considered to be the most beautiful viewpoint in the area that offers incredible view of the city of Bled, lake Bled, castle and surrounding mountains. In summer you can enjoy in adrenaline-drenched sledding (summer tobogganing), visiting Adventure Park or taking a ride with the tube, tuba jump or free fall simulator. You can take a relaxing walk through meadows and woods on the Rikli Fitness Trail. In winter you can ski on a small, but settled ski slope that is lit for night skiing and offers organized ski school, equipment rental and Sporty's Children Snow Park. Straza ski slope is accessible by car or by foot as it is only a few minutes' walk from the center of Bled. The resort is closed in a heavy rain.

Having traveled Europe for four months, and riding many toboggans, this was our favorite. Firstly, the views are so beautiful, being able to see the castle, the church, and the lake all at once is an incredible sight from the elevation. The attraction is easily accessible on foot (if you want some exercise), or by ski lift and any local can point you in the right direction. The employees were very kind. Best of all was the beautiful and fun ride down the mountain! You can control how fast or slow you go, so dont worry about it being too scary if you dont like fast rides! All in all, a cheap, fun attraction, and a must in Lake Bled!
