I read something about it being the most beautiful sight in the world, but I can't find the link now. I think I found out about the place from JNTO but their site doesn't have familiar info. Tatebayashi has this festival from mid-April to mid-May. During the festival, there are shuttle buses that take you to the park directly from the train station. It's been said the azaleas here might be the best in the world. There were many, many shrubs on display in different configurations and with a wide variety of colors. There is even an 800-yr old azalea tree on display.
I can't find any really good links or blogs on the web with pictures that do justice to this place. I did take a lot of pics but felt it wasn't quite peak bloom and was supposed to go back one day but never did.

Now that Sakura season ending North of Tokyo, we heard of Floor Sakura blossoms at the Treasure garden, Tatebayasji, Japan. It's a long travel of around 70 km North of Tokyo by Tobu Isesaki line train, but well worth it. It's a very nicely planned garden (entrance 800 Yen). Inside the garden there are large colourful flower beds of ground Sakura (not cherry blossoms.... they were nearing end). It reminded me of the Tulip beds near the great Kaukenhof Gardens near Amsterdam. ....It was a great spectacle with multiple coloured flower beds. Dropping sakura petals added white colour to the ground. There were not many people around on a Saturday afternoon and an excellent place to spend some quiet time.

We were not prepared for what we would see driving through Gunma en route to this wonderful destination because the area seemed to be drab and peppered with small farms. However, once we turned into the grounds we were pleasantly surprised. We were greeted by a wonderful rabbit by Pompon, more below. The museum was easy to visit, there is generally no admission fee whatsoever (although on occasion there is a special fee for a loan exhibition). The collection features sculpture on view in a long, unobstructed glass fronted gallery which enables one to walk around and appreciate the works of art in the round. There is an extraordinary collection of engaging animal sculptures by the French artist, Francis Pompon (1855-1933) and as well as his recreated studio. This was a pleasant surprise and well worth the effort to get to.

Tatebayashi Azalea Matsuri

Held every year from mid-April through early May, this festival takes place at the Tsutsujigaoka Park in Tatebayashi, Gunma Prefecture. Azalea have long grown in this area, and they were protected by the daimyo warlords even as far back as over four hundred years ago. Today, this park is designated as a national cultural asset and listed as one of Japan's finest views. The Tatebayashi Azalea Matsuri begins when the azaleas bloom and spans for close to a month. There are also many other rare varietals on view. Guides are in attendance to describe in detail the beauty of the flowers.

A little bit of everything: swans and ducks in the winter, wisteria blooming in spring, a shrine on a small island in the lake (accessible by bridge), a new pathway around the lake, play area for kids, lots of benches and on clear days, it's possible to get a glimpse of Mt. Fuji! Very peaceful and relaxing park.
