Adega Jose de Sousa

In the center of the picturesque town of Reguengos de Monsaraz, you can visit one of the world’s most unusual wineries. Keeping alive a tradition initiated by the Romans over 2000 years ago, the Jose de Sousa winery is equipped with 114 clay amphorae, a fermentation method as rare as it is old. The old cellars are below ground level and contain the urns and two open lagares for treading the grapes

In rota dos vinhos information Center they advised us to visit José de Sousa winery. Mainly because they still used the big clay pots for producing the wines. We were not disappointed! We were lucky enough to be the only two in the tour. The guide was really good and spoke English very well. We learned a lot about the process and at the end we tasted 4 wines including regional snacks. Even the young wines were nice. I highly recommend to also taste one of the clay pot wines.

We went to Reguengos de Monsaraz looking for the distillery of one of our favorite gins, Sharish. We found much more. We found the result of hard work, passion, down to earth people with an amazing communication capability towards everyone who steps inside their workspace and their engagement in the community. Every single bottle of Blue Magic is hand bottled.Gin Sharish is not only a delicious gin but a work of love by Antonio and Patricia and we fell on our knees with their “newborn”, the Sharish Orange Blossom. Not to be missed.

Observatorio Oficial Dark Sky Alqueva

The official Dark Sky® Alqueva Observatory in Cumeada, a village near Reguengos de Monsaraz, is equipped with cutting-edge telescopes for solar and astronomical observations. These provide for a unique visual experience, from observing the planets to looking at the craters on the moon, moving on to the deeper sky with a cosmic journey among the nebulae, the galaxies and the swarms of stars.

This was a brilliant star gazing experience - highly recommended. The conditions of the area give great prospects for seeing some amazing things and the observatory itself is really well equipped and though through (eg. Floor space has been cleared to avoid stumbling in the dark, steps for children to be able to reach the telescope). But the major advantage is Nuno whose commentary, ability to hunt out objects of interest and understandable answers to the most mind bending questions was all second to none. Despite the near full moon when we went, Nuno gave us great views of nebula, red dwarves, white dwarves as well as closer objects including an amazing view of Saturn’s rings.

I must confess I’m not a white wine lover except for the occasional really dry white wine (usually green wine from Portuguese region Minho), so it comes as no surprise that white wines in Portugal are not my cup of tea. The amazing and incredible surprise comes under the name of 2, a new make by Herdade do Esporao,an Alentejo wine maker who decided to create an Alentejo white wine with green wine grapes. Outstanding!!! Dry enough, bodied enough, strong more than enough. Congratulations to Esporao for an outstanding white wine.

Reviewed By Maruespi

I highly recommend to visit the Ervideira wine lounge. The staff is very friendly and the wines are top quality(but don't expect budget prices per bottle). We did a wine tasting with degustation, 7 different wines along with regional ham, cheese and bread. The tour of the wine production process area was also interesting although it is not very big. We ended up buying 6 bottles at the end of the tour.
