Ticket to Ride Surf School

Reviewed By ajhill01 - Cambridge, United Kingdom

I visited the surf school with my 20 year old son for a beginners half day lesson. Neither of us had ever surfed before and I was very apprehensive about the waves, the coldness of the water and whether I would enjoy it.
The experience was wonderful. The guys at the surf school were really friendly. Julian and Chris made us feel really welcome and didn't make me feel old or out of place wanting to try Surfing for the first time in my 50s!
The wetsuits fit well and kept us really warm. The safety briefings and instructions on the beach were really clear and they got us into the water with minimum fuss. Chris, our instructor, gave me an alternative technique to use when he saw I was finding it difficult.
They look after your valuables in the shop whilst you surf and there is an outside shower and changing cubicles. Everything was made very easy.
We stayed at Seiners, the pub next door, which was a great location. Everyone at Ticket to Rude was friendly, professional, very keen to keep you safe and so full of enthusiasm for the surf that it was infectious. I was soon going out to try bigger waves with a huge smile on my face! I loved it and I definitely want to go back.
One half day lesson probably won't get you standing up on the board but it's also very tiring, so it's worth having two lessons and staying overnight.
I would 100% recommend it.

From the moment I booked the lesson, I was made to feel so welcome. Stephanie was so polite and helpful, with contagious enthusiasm. We were given quality wetsuits and surfboards and marched to the beach were we introduced ourselves. I was on my own but it felt like I was there with friends. Matt, James and Gavin, our instructors, looked after us in the best possible way. We started with a run in the sea for a quick swim warm up and then sat on the surfboards on the beach to listen to the theory. Safety tips, then how to catch a wave and how to stand on the board. While practicing in the sea, the three instructors were around us all the time, giving out tips and encouragement always with a smile and a few nice words. These guys really, really made it all so nice and easy. We all stood on the surfboard and many of us did quite a few yards at times. We finished with huge smiles and all the staff helped us put the boards back in the rack and said friendly, sincere and spontaneous thanks, well dones and goodbyes. Can't wait for the next lesson..! Thank you boys and girls at Perranporth surf school , you are awesome.

Perranporth to St Agnes Clifftop Walk

Most of this 3.5 mile walk on the South West Coast Path from Perranporth is fairly level and provides excellent cliff top walking. From start to finish you can experience the mining heritage, as well as keeping your eye out for the birdlife and wild flowers. This walk is particularly good for dogs as it passes Beaches and pubs where dogs are welcome.

Firstly I would recommend personally you take the walk from St Agnes on to Perranporth. I found the hardest part right at the beginning, and the views as you walked towards Perranporth of the beach were breathtaking. I was staying in Perranporth but you could use the Droskyn carpark in the town which basically is where the walk ends - postcode TR6 0DR. It's then a small walk down Cliff Road to the bus stop right on the seafront. The number 87 (hourly I believe) costs just £3.20 one way for an adult. Its a lovely ride down to St Agnes of about 15 minutes. You get off at a small roundabout with a surf shop to your left and a pub straight in front. A ten minute stroll down Quay Road (directly to the right of the pub) and the walk starts just behind the Driftwood spa pub.
As I said I preferred that way as the initial climb is tough at St Agnes, it was nice to get it out of the way! It's a four mile walk definitely not suited to flip flops or sandals, for small kids or people with mobility problems. Sometimes I felt like a mountain goat scrambling up the narrow path!! However the majority is a nice gradient, the only problem you'll have is stopping every five minutes to wonder at the view and take photographs!
Benches or picnic tables dotted the routes. Lots of disused mines, the aerodrome too was interesting. My favourite part was seeing the stunning beach at Perranporth as I rounded a corner in the distance. The other reason I'd pick Perranporth is there is a bigger array of restaurants, cafes etc to enjoy. I didn't have a bad meal there. However in the height of the season if you prefer a bit less busy then St Agnes would be more your cup of tea, and the pub at the start of the walk looked very nice. Highly recommend, the bus service in the area is very punctual. I got details of it on the bus times website (literally google bus times Perranporth to St Agnes and it will come up).

I tried kite Surfing a few years ago, but the wind was never really strong enough so I thought I'd give it another try. Mobius were happy to let me skip the first day of the course and pick it up from there which worked perfectly. I had 2 days of good wind getting back used to the kite again and then quickly on to trying to get up on the board. It was hard work, but loads of fun, and by the end I was starting to get the hang of it and had a few OK runs.
Timo was a great instructor, very helpful, and always around when I needed him (usually for sorting out a crashed kite!). He was very patient and obviously had a lot of experience of teaching a range of people how to kite surf. I can't wait until next time.

Rude staff. We were firstly questioned over our deposit, which is sent in advance via email booking /bacs " well you should put your name on the transfer or I don't know who's who" er.... I did. Then given the wrong advise and the 2 hour ride we went on was NOT suitable for beginners! No advise given as to footwear resulting in bad bruising to our legs, at one point I had a panic attack on the horse as was made to walk down a huge cliff edge to the beach! Never having been on a horse it was terrifying but I was "not allowed" to get off!!?? Very upset & complete waste of money! Staff kept saying "this is why it's called a sport it's hard work" patronising and unhelpful. Ruined our anniversary. Such a shame as with little effort it could of been really nice.

We were here for the day with a large family group. We hired wet suits and body boards and it was worth every penny. It made going into the sea far more enjoyable. Not expensive and would recommend. Life guards took great care of everyone and Perranporth ended up as our favourite place in Cornwall. Thank you Perranporth

If you like visiting unusual sites, then make your way to Penhale Sands which are not far from Perranporth. You will see signs to this ancient site & you have to make your way across the sand dunes to reach it. Unfortunately it is just a ruin now which was for a considerable time actually completely covered by these dunes. It is a wild but peaceful place & well worth a visit.

The Hovercraft Experience

Reviewed By Arthurjolie

Beautiful location, amazing experience! We were in the area on a weekend break and I looked for exciting things to do. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this. The guy doing it was so helpful and informative. The driving of the hovercraft itself was so much fun! I got to go round a grass track several times in the end at what really felt like a fast speed, and I think I really got the hang of it. Well worth every penny!! Will be back.
