The Cedars of God

An ancient grove of cedars, the oldest in Lebanon, makes a beautiful site.

This forest is a small forest in the middle of the Cedars region. There is no specific entrance fee, just donations (pay as much as you want). You can walk around in like approx. 45mins. You'll see the huge old cedar trees which are the symbol of Lebanon. In the middle of the forest there is such a pretty small church that adds up to how holy the place is. And then you can see on your way, a big tree, in which sculptures are incarnated in it by a Lebanese artist, and there search for the hidden sculptures in the tree and enjoy the AMAZING views.

One of the things that has struck me about Lebanon is the sheer natural beauty of the country. The mountain regions are breath-taking, especially in winter. If you are going to visit (and you should) it is advisable to take an experianced driver as the roads are narrow and driving in Lebanon is interesting with drivers having a somewhat casual relationship with the road rules.

I am a fan of Gibran's poetry but really did not like his art. The museum has a mausoleum where Gibran's remains are interred and it is pretty, set amongst flowers and an amazing view of mountain, snow and trees. Worth while if you are a Gibran fan.

Citadel Saint Gilles (Qal'at Sinjil)

Reviewed By UNNIMAYA - Abu Dhabi UAE

Built at a vantage point offering a birds eye view of Tripoli, this crusader castle dating back to 1103 has currently a heavy military presence currently- however this should not bother you since they keep to themselves.
There are permanent exhibits in the castle which are worth visiting to understand the history associated with this monument. And of course there are plenty of photo opportunities.
You can spend about an hour of two visiting the castle and the nearby souk after parking your car in one of the paid manned private parking lots.

Although disappointed not to see the wild animals anywhere on our way, kids were overjoyed with the experience that is sadly enough, becoming rare in Lebanon. Make plans to spend way more than announced on the brochure though as the sceneries are great and the way up is not a joy ride :)

Ixsir

Reviewed By B A - Paris, France

To be clear from the beginning, this review is not about the wine that they make, but rather about the winery visit. We drove out from Beirut, and followed gps instructions to 'Ixsir'. But gps got us lost and took us on several dirt mountain roads, and eventually to a dead end. So, my first recommendation: do not you use gps to navigate in the region, even if you find that it is quite reliable in Beirut.
We got to the winery late, and we obviously missed our reservation for the winery tour. But, since most us in the group didn't care much about the visit and were more interested in tasting Ixsir's products, we remained keen on going in and inquiring about the tasting session. The staff kindly acknowledged and offered us a rosé (Altitude Rosé) to start the tasting session with. After the rosé we moved straight to a red (their top of the pyramid wine - El rouge). AND THAT WAS IT!
It is a pity that a winery as well funded as Ixsir is investing so little attention to attract true wine lovers who would rather have an actual tasting session, then stroll around the winery and take random pictures. I was honestly very curious about their white (El - blanc), and their more affordable red, which they didn't even bother offering. What's more shocking was that earlier that week we had visited a much smaller family winery in Batroun that had us try 5 of their wines. When we pointed this out to the staff at Ixsir, they politely said that they had strict orders from the administration to only offer 2. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT.
My last recommendation is the following: go there for the mountain scenery, and maybe for the visit, but if you're truly interested in tasting Batroun Wine, avoid Ixsir and try one of the smaller producers.
