The 10 Best Things to do in Murren, Canton of Bern

May 19, 2022 Dorsey Hagwood

The only way to reach lovely Murren is by taking a series of trains and cable cars. Once you’re there, you’re walking or biking around this charming car-free village. But it’s well-worth the trek, especially if you’re a skier or snowboarder. There are 32 miles of trails plus lots of off-piste opportunities. The sledding is even better. Take a cable car to the summit of Schilthorn for epic alpine views.

Via Ferrata

Rather than explain what this is like, just search “Murren Via Ferrata “ on YouTube and you’ll see exactly what you’re in for. It’s one of the most amazing things we’ve ever done! You do need to be in good shape and it’s one of the best leg workouts you’ll ever get. We were sore for days but it was worth it! Allow some extra time before or after to walk around Murren. It’s a beautiful town with some great shops and places to eat. I highly recommend taking a Go-Pro on this adventure. I bought one just for this trip and it was worth every penny because we came back with amazing footage. They don’t rent them but you can ask for a helmet with a mount although you should bring your own device that connects the camera to the helmet mount. Also be sure to turn the power off when you’re not taking video since the hike is longer than the battery life. The new cameras all come with voice control so turning it on and off is easy and hands-free.

Third time to Murren and everytime we take this up at least two times per trip. It is great to start most of these hikes up at this point and work your way back down to town or wherever the longer hikes end up taking you too. Also enjoy hanging out in and around the nicest kids playground in the area.

In winter we have 3 shops open, specialized in ski rental. We got all kinds of different equipment, from beginners to premium and also downhill skis for the Inferno race. See us at the cable car station or in the sportcenter, or contact us via email or phone, we are happy to help you with everything we can

We originally booked a guided Via Ferrata with Outdoor Interlaken. The Intersport shop is the meeting point and where you get all the gear. Unfortunately, they didn’t put our name in the system so the guide never showed up. Lucky for us, Tim was there! He spent lots of time on the phone with the guideS company and Outdoor Interlaken to try to find a solution. We ended up renting the gear and doing the Via Ferrata on our own! It’s waaaaay cheaper and it was an unforgettable experience! Thanks again Tim!
