Our experience at this hotel was absolutely amazing. The house we stayed in was beautifully restored, the pool was lovely and the grounds were meticulously maintained. We enjoyed travelling around the countryside as well. Our only complaint was that the beds were as hard as sleeping on the floor. However, the kitchen was nicely appointed with everything you would need and the interior was comfortably decorated. 4 stars for the inadequate beds.

While staying in Florence we made a few day trips to the surrounding areas, and were recommended to visit this site. We were glad we did as it turned out to be one of the more fascinating sights we saw during our trip.
During the 16th century travel to the holy land, by christian pilgrims, was a dangerous and difficult undertaking due to the Turkish rule, and the enterprising Franciscan order decided to build a "replica" of Jerusalem in the Tuscan hills, so that people could make their pilgrimage there instead. To this end they constructed a series of some 25 chapels, representing the holy sites of Jerusalem, arranged in a reasonable relative geographic layout, on a couple of hills and Valleys in the region of the monastery of San Vivaldo in the municipality of Montaione.
Many of the chapels were destroyed over the years in landslides and earthquakes, but 12 of them remain containing outstandingly beautiful frescoes and terracotta statues (executed mainly by the school of Della Robbia).
We were shown around the site by a delightful Franciscan monk who spent over two hours taking us to each chapel, explaining the details of the biblical stories and the artwork.
Definitely not your ordinary museum ..... this is an absolute jewel which should not be missed.
Access is quite easy by car (about an hour from Florence) and it's worth checking the opening times prior to driving out there as the site is open only during the afternoon and the hours are quite short

I recently rented a MTB from Franco at the shop and my experience was really great. Franco was very responsive to my emails and he quickly got me setup with a bike for 5 days of riding in Tuscany. He also set me up with a helmet, pump, lock, spare tire and even toe clips as I did not bring my cycling shoes! Super easy to find and I was quickly riding through the hills. I will use them again.

If you are looking for an out of sight view over Tuscan landscape, this is the place.
You can reach the Piertina just passing Iano village, proceeding for 1 km and at the first cros take the left direction to Palagio. After 1 km you will find the road sign "Pietrina", take the left and geutp on the asfalt climb, (easy to do on foot or by bike or car too).
You ll find a little sqaure surrounded by wood. A little track will take you in front of this pictouresque church. Here you can see the remains of the medieval towers used as militay check points during medieval war times. Feel free to open the door of the church, turn on the lights and sit in the mystical atmosphere of this little church.
But don't miss the panoramic Belvedere point: just turn around the church and you will discover an amazing Panorama over the tuscan hills, the best one you can discover in Montaione. You can see even Volterra town. It worth to visit it at daylight or at sunset time too.

This wine tasting and wine producer was recomended to us by our Marina from Ill Torrino villa, where we were accomodated.
The wines were simply perfect, the host simply fabulous!!!! Prices fit, the quality outstanding. Tasting went according rules, we get perfect explanations of all wines we tried. This were the best wines tasting so far in Tuscany we did. Vino Santo is very special, really something very unique. Also olive oil produced by him is outstanding.
We also were in Villa Pillo - another famous wine producer in this region, but nothing special.
The room is small, you can also sit outside. The host also has horse shelter in which he was carrying about 63 horses.

Overall, the tasting as well as friendly talk with host made our afternoon unforgetable. And every time we open a new bottle of Villa Filicaja we remember these perfect moments.

ANPIL means "Area naturale protetta di interesse locale (i.e. Protected Natural Area of Local Interest); "Alta valle del Torrente Carfalo" means "High Carfalo creek valley"
The valley is located into the Montaione's municipality; since 2012 it's equipped with signposted paths, to allow visitors to appreciate its environmental features, which are many and significant.
Being a valley deeply cut in the hills (a kind of canyon), it has a natural environment unusually wet and cool, compared to the average of the low Tuscan hills. This explains some rare features of it compared to Tuscany or even to Italy.
Among these is the presence of the beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), which in Italian peninsula is normally over 900 meters, and here instead is found between 300 and even 180 meters above sea level: by far the lowest altitude in peninsular Italy. This presence can be explained as a "relic" of the environmental conditions of the valley at the time of the last ice age: the beech tree could resist here until the present time, thanks to the already mentioned humidity and temperature conditions. The same thing can be said of yew trees (Taxus baccata L.) and of holly bushes (Ruscus aculeatus L.).
The paths in the area allow us to appreciate these presences, and thus also to conduct visits alone, without a guide; provided that use is made, as well as of the signs, of the map rather well done, found googling the area name, then looking at the site "toscananelcuore" (Tuscany in the hearth).
In this way we have come, in a beautiful, warm day in early April, most of the trails, enjoying the presence of these unusual plants (including a huge yew, perhaps 500 years old) and also of other natural curiosities: for example a source of "Acqua gassata" (carbonated water), we also tasted; and, perhaps above all, the spectacular bends of the river, dug in the compact, fossilized sand banks, high up to 20 meters.
However, given its secretive habits, we could not see a typical local animal species, a rare kind of small salamander (Salamandra perspicillata, Savi 1821), discovered here just in 2001 (as if, instead of in Tuscany, we were in the Amazon!)
If you have no choice, the park is also within walking distance, from San Vivaldo hamlet; but a car will take up you to one of the trailheads, then to shorten the walk.
These seem trails that - if the weather is favorable - you can do at any time of the year, except in the hot months.

We've been in Castelfalfi few moths ago, we took three e-bikes from this shop also for our children and we made a tour around the Golf club and the Natural reserve of Castelfalfi visiting also some particular villages of the area, the guys that own the shop are very kind and prepared and we enjoied so much the experience at all.
We raccomed absolutely to every family that visit the area of Castelfalfi and Montaione, next time I'll do a wine tasting tour without childs!!!

We happened across it on Sunday morning after church had finished, hundreds spilling out and taking the chance to soak up the sunny morning and chat to friends.
A great occasion, a chance for us to take in the fashion and exuberance of the residents.
