The 10 Best Things to do in Lagos, Algarve

September 11, 2021 Matilde Konrad

There is rich and beautiful history within Lagos’ 14th century walls, from its fortress to picturesque churches like Medieval São João Hermitage and the 17th-century São Sebastião. But that’s all appetizer. People come here for a main-course coastal buffet featuring more than a half-dozen beautiful beaches. Quiet sandy coves are sandwiched between dramatic cliffs. The sandy 2.5-mile stretch of Meia Praia caters to every water sport imaginable. And when you’ve had your fill, you can digest your day with some of the best nightlife in the Algarve region.

Boat trip is the best way to explore the very beautiful Atlantic coastline in Lagos - very beautiful caves and grottos reflected in transparent emerald water versus terracotta cliffs. Highly recommended as a trip - the guides are very friendly and happy to tell the story of the place

Our favourite beach around Lagos. The sea definitely felt warmer than our closest beach in Luz! We were so happy here after feeling a little cramped on other beaches. So much space, beautiful sand and the opportunity to take a lovely, long walk. Easy to park here too.

We haven´t descended to the beach, just watch it from the top of the "falesia", a great view of the clear water beach and the "falésias" formations on both sides of the beach, Definitely worthwhile seeing it.

Centro Cultural de Lagos

Stayed in the heart of it all week, and absolutely loved it. The architecture, cobbled streets, beautiful little stores that hold tons of treasures, and wonderful restaurants and cafes- easily the highlight of the visit to the Algarve. The beaches were just icing! Lovely slow start to the day with activity increasing steadily, and watching the hubbub during the day was charming. Such a charming place.

Parque Zoologico de Lagos

Not been to a zoo for some decades, but with a grandchild in tow this place is a godsend. All displays are at child level and the birds and animals are easily seen, and there are loads of them. You can easily spend hours here and I have to say that grandad enjoyed himself. Negative reviews are interesting saying that lions and tigers were expected. Depends on your definition of the word zoo but what would you call a collection of birds, animals and reptiles other than a zoo? Loads of cafes, clean and tidy and a typical Portuguese restaurant on exit, what more can you want?

Great to walk around and watch the beautiful boats. Also, hundreds of fish swimming around. We sat in the main marina and had a refreshing drink whilst watching the world go by. Absolutely lovely.
