Lake Nojiri

Not many people, and only those who are native or lived here will know about Nojiri Lake. I found this area on Google Map and found it to be very unique thus, book a night stay in Guesthouse Lamp hostel. It's a charming little lake town with mountains surrounding it on all sides. The lake was foggy during sunrise and snowy morning, and I caught a great moment by the lake. This lake have pre-historic values which made it so much more unique and was also formed due tp a volcano eruption in the ancient time. Naumann elephant was found here. You can visit the museum dedicated to it. They have sightseeing boats which will brings you around and also to the little island in the middle of the lake where a shrine was built on. Overall, there are so much in such a little town.

Lake Nojiri Naumann Elephant Museum

Reviewed By BoardingPass151160 - Singapore, Singapore

I didn't spend enough time in Nojiri Lake else I would do the elephant walk. I didn't know what to expect from this museum. As I entered the glass door, there was this elderly woman sitting behind the counter smiling at me. I only could speak very little Japanese to get by. She was very pleasant and pointed out to me the direction and said there was also some exhibition on the 3rd floor. I'm not a historic buff but just curious enough to want to explore. You may see some stuff animals like a "reindeer" maybe, and small bear, apart from the Naumann Elephant fossil. There was detailed explanation of the fossilization and how the Naumann Elephant was found. A thorough excavation activities was explained by photographic and audio displays. However, most of the exhibit tags are in Japanese, have no fear, use Google translate, well if you don't mind. I'm afraid the audio was also in Japanese, wholly. There are some interactive display as well. You can even touch the elephant tooth. 3rd floor was a small display room which you can access through a Hitachi lift staircase. Very nice Hitachi lift, sorry out of context. There was some human skulls display that explain different age of human civilization and some volcanic rocks which you can visualize. A little creepy for me but then if you are interested in rocks, you could stay a little while longer. On the ground floor next to the reception, is a souvenir corner where you can buy some mementos. Again, the elederly lady is very sweet when she found out that I'm not Japanese. Makes me wanta to be able to speak Japanese with her to find out more. The whole town, basically, are enamored by the elephant phenomenom that they even have an elephant walk where you have to go arohnd town to find these little steel display of the elephant and its little caveman.
