Walked up the steps/road to Hiyori-yama. Having stayed at Kikuchi Ryokan, the steps/road were located literally around the corner from the inn. It's about a a 20-minute hike to the top. You will be rewarded with sweeping views of the ocean and the river. There are benches placed throughout and lots of signs in Japanese and English that show some of the "before" and "after" photos of various vantage points (pre-quake/tsunami and after). It is sobering to look down upon the flatlands adjacent to the ocean/river and realize the magnitude of the tragedy that struck this community. Well worth the hike up, take a moment to sit and reflect and pray for peace on earth, and never forget March 11, 2011.

Tashiro Island

Just got off the ferry after a day of feeding the stray cats. I researched this island & flew to Sendai from Tokyo just to see the cats. One hour taxi from Sendai to the Ishinomaki ferry then a 45 minute ferry ride to the island. A lot of planning & money to feed stray cats but I wasn't disappointed. I just felt so sad to see the condition they were in. I brought two huge totes of cat milk, dry & wet cat food along with bowls to feed them all & can say my Mission was a success! Too bad they don't have a veterinary clinic that would go to the island to take care of them. There were several that needed medical attention. Lots of kittens that didn't look so well. I used a syringe to feed one little kitten who could hardly eat. Another one had tape wrapped around its neck too tight. I cut it off for the poor cat & it seemed happy to be free of it. If I lived near the island, I'd be over feeding them all the time. If you go make sure you bring lots of cat food with you. I could tell they preferred the wet food. Probably because their teeth are in bad condition. There were no fights when I put several bowls of wet food out for them. If fact several shared bowls with each other. They were starving! I am so glad I took the extra time & money to go to "Cat Island"! No English spoken but several people from the ferry were amazed at all the food I brought to feed the cats that I started giving out food & bowls to them to help me feed all the cats. In the end you don't need a common language but a common goal!

The museum for Shotaro Ishinomori, famous comic author. It is very interesting if you are familiar to Japanese comic culture. If not, it sometimes looks boring but you should go and see the location in the middle of river. It was heavily damaged by tsunami in 2011.

Ishinomaki Manga Road

The Manga Museum is definitely one of the biggest tourist draws to Ishinomaki. The route from the train station to the Manga Museum is easy to follow--just follow all the Manga characters along the route. It's about a 15-20 min. walk, but you'll want to stop and take photos of all the characters along the way.

We drove out here from a fabulous visit to oharahama, to see the bay below this hill top lookout. Apparently during the 2011 tsunami, the entire bay emptied out, the waves gathering force before devastating the Oshika peninsula. Unfortunately the day we finally get to visit, the view is almost completely obscured by the incoming mist. It is still a peaceful, beautiful spot well worth a visit. There was a coffee, cider and hotdog van onsite when we visited.
