Open air museums is something the Japanese do very well. All of those I've visited have been worthwhile and Boso no Mura is no exception. Here the farm houses, shops and other attractions are replicas rather than moved in buildings but they create a great atmosphere and on a sunny day well worth a walk around. The people working or volunteering there were very willing to chat, in English. The lady in the candle making shop, the ladies in the ice cream stall, the workers on one of the farm plots were all helpful and insightful. Being a bit of a hike from Tokyo and even further from Yokohama there were not many people here the day I visited and everyone was delighted to see foreigners enjoying the place. Well worth the time and effort spent getting there.

Owashi Shrine

Reviewed By thinkNarita - Narita, Japan

There are two types of Shinto shrines in Japan; one is something to do with the Emperor's family, the other is somewhat spontaneous enshrinement of regional deities. While the former tend to attract ordinary tourists, the latter is considered just a spiritual center for locals, and not worth visiting.
Owashi Shrine, aka Golden Eagle Shrine, is the latter, and i must say not to be missed by foreign visitors.
The way to make a visit is to climb up this steep stair case from the parking lot. Do not use the gradual one to the right.
After reaching the top you will find the shrine, relatively small in size, not so old (about 40 years old) building, however, the enshrinement dates back to 10th century A.D..
By the way, Japanese always use the word "Shrine" for Shintoism related entities, while "Temple" is used for Buddhism. That's how we decided to translate 150 years ago when we switched our primary foreign language from Dutch to English.
Now after reaching the top, you need to have some locals show you around the premises and objects. Staff there hardly speak English, so unless you speak Japanese, better to bring someone as an interpreter or a local guide. Recommended is of course Narita Rainbow Tours, the only company offering local tours around Narita.
I don't reveal any more, in order for you to fully appreciate what you experience here.

Hakuchonosato is one of the Kanto area's most popular stopovers for swan from Siberia. It started almost 20 years ago with only six swan. Mr. Deyama, wildlife management officer tried to feed them with patience, then local support group was established and contributed to pour water into the one of the rice field during winter time for migratory birds. Thanks to their effort, the number of swan has increased year by year and now more than 1000? come and stay from October till March. Around 3 o'clock they begin to come back to the rice field. Their beautiful water-landing at dusk is stunning.
