St. Dunstan's Basilica

This is a beautiful old cathedral located in the heart of the city. It's over 100 years old.

During our “10-Day Canada and New England” cruise aboard Caribbean Princess, our ship docked at Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Since we had spare time in the morning before our shore excursion to the Green Gables, we left the ship and walked to St. Dunstan's Basilica in an easy walking distance. Walking along Great George Street, we passed by the statue of Angus Bernard MacEachern, the first bishop of the diocese of Charlottetown. As we approached the basilica, we realized that the basilica had multiple smaller spires surrounding the towering twin spires. The basilica’s stone brick façade with the dominating twin spires and the simple cross on the gable between the spires was impressive enough for the basilica as the Cathedral of the Diocese of Charlottetown and also as a National Historic Site of Canada as a fine example of the High Victorian Gothic Revival architectural style. Upon entering the basilica, we were pleasantly surprised by the beautiful Gothic nave which gave us a feel of warm and comforting feel instead of dark and oppressive feel of many Gothic cathedrals. The ornate cathedral ceiling and walls in white color lightened the feel inside the nave, and the light color marble like columns also had the same effect. The ornate high altar with beautiful stained glass window with saints and angels was so elegant. The stately pipe organ and the chandeliers were elegant, too. This basilica is a must visit landmark in Charlottetown.

We went to the Open House at the beginning of the month (Dec. 4th). This is such a beautiful house and it's lovely to see the gorgeous Christmas decorations in the 4 rooms that are open to the public. There was a youth choir singing when we were there, and we were greeted by the Lieutenant Governor, Antoinette Perry.

Victoria Park

Located right by the river, the Victoria Park caters to people of all ages, with a bandshell, benches overlooking the bay and best of all, childrens activities including a free pool and the most amazing musical park, which I believe was sponsored by Candian Tire. Giant instruments, slides, jumpers, and four different play areas, keep children amused for hours. The boardwalk is great for strolling and one can refresh the soul just by sitting and watching the sun go down. I didn't see any concession stands, so take a picnic, plenty of fluids and enjoy a whole day at this beautiful park.

This place is a gem. Great shops and a wonderful upstairs restaurant overlooking everything. Great free out door live singing every night. The restaurants all serve great tasting food. Even have a restaurant that makes wood fired pizza. A visit to this place is a must if you are in Charlottetown Prince Edward Island. Note: you can get a deep sea fishing excursion from this wharf. Can’t wait to get back.
