The 10 Best Things to do in Camps Bay, Western Cape

October 7, 2021 Madelene Haan

Shaded spots go early at Cape Town's crowded Camps Bay, where locals picnic and play in the strong Atlantic waves. Look for the flagged bathing areas for safer swims for all the family. Festive cafes sit adjacent to the sands, which are dramatically set at the foot of the Twelve Apostles mountains.

Nice and small generally sheltered from the wind. Just keep an eye on the tide. The beach is always clean but can get a bit crowded later in the day.

Not many are aware of the "back" of Table Mountain and Kasteelspoort is one of the hiking routes on that side to the top. The detour past the reservoirs combined with the fantastic views as well as the flora make it incredible.

Camp's Bay Beach

Just up Kloof Nek Road from the center of town is this thriving beach community. Plenty of trendy nightclubs, shops and cafes bring diners and shoppers, while tranquil seas and fine white sand draw sun worshippers and swimmers.

Reviewed By yns_10 - Sydney, Australia

Camps Bay has a great beach, and there are good shops and fabulous bars and restaurants along the esplanade. Yes, it got extremely windy one day while we were there which made it less than comfortable on the beach, but the cafes are all adept at sheltering patrons from the elements when required.

The Leopard Bar

A friend told us to visit the hotel and the leopard bar to come and watch the sunset and wow was he right. The outside terrace is the place to watch a daily treat of the sun going down. Truly amazing. The bar itself is brilliant, loads of staff catering for your alcoholic needs. Very friendly despite the posh surrounding and as the RAND is cheap the the mighty pound it’s very reasonable too. Definitely recommend a visit, we also had tea at the grill room (see separate review) again very good and well priced.

Bakoven Beach

Reviewed By gordy3000 - Brussels, Belgium

This quiet part of the coast is a great place to watch and listen to the sea. We were staying at accommodation close by and just walked down. It took 5 minutes. There are probably a few access points to different parts of the beach - we walked down a lane between the private houses and where we were the beach was largely rocky. It was beautiful in the spring sun. There did not seem to be any amenities (aside from a few cafés on the main road) but it was wonderful just to be there in the late afternoon.
