The 10 Best Things to Do in Bamberg, Germany

December 12, 2017 Flossie Demartino

Like Rome, Bamberg sits on seven hills, though these are lush, green Bavarian ones. You’ll find all sorts of architecture here, so enjoy exploring the cobbled streets. Plenty of shopping and museums await you, as do nine different breweries. The city loves markets and festivals, especially around Christmas.

Bamberg Altstadt

From the 10th century onwards, this town became an important link with the Slav peoples, especially those of Poland and Pomerania. During its period of greatest prosperity, from the 12th century onwards, the architecture of Bamberg strongly influenced northern Germany and Hungary. In the late 18th century it was the centre of the Enlightenment in southern Germany, with eminent philosophers and writers such as Hegel and Hoffmann living there.

The Old Town Hall of Bamberg was located in the middle of Regnitz River and became a landmark there. All visitors passing by would stop here and took photos of this half-timbered house from different angles. Highly recommended.

Bamberger Dom

Reviewed By GRAHAM C - Sevenoaks, United Kingdom

This stunning building is the centre piece of Old Town Bamberg and houses the famous Bamberger Rider sculpture which was mistakenly identified by the Nazis. Unfortunately, whilst I was there the building was undergoing restoration inside and out which clouded my judgement. The surrounding area has some beautiful architecture and the rose garden next to the Dom would be spectacular when in bloom. Still as part of the medieval walking tour it is worth a visit.

Garden forms part of the The New Residenz and contains thousands of roses. Not at their best at the time of our visit but worth a wander round. Garden also provides an opportunity to soak up the views over the town.

Altenburg

Walk up from Bamberg is hardly strenuous if you are of fit mind and body. Views are nice but not spectacular. Much of the 'castle' was reconstructed in the period of the Romantic movement. It is all free, mind. Nice little restaurant in the courtyard where you can have a lovely beer before you head back. All-in-all a decent couple of hours spent.

The title is filling you with expectations. That aside, is my favorite spot in Bamberg. The running water and the dam, the extended houses over the river, the bridge with the old town hall, all gives you a very nice feeling and fantastic photo shooting opportunities.

You can really see why this area was used for the filming of the three musketeers. It is really beautiful with heaps of character. Loved the old architecture and flowers in the windows. Picture perfect moment.

Impressive building located in close proximity to the Cathedral and Old Courtyard. Very similar in appearance to the Residenz building in Wurzburg but certainly not as large. Didn’t have time to visit inside during our guided tour but would visit next time. Adjacent rose garden is well worth wandering round as it provides views overlooking the town.
