The 10 Best Things to do Good for a Rainy Day in Yellowknife, Canada

December 21, 2021 Joeann Galban

The land of the midnight sun awaits on the northern shores of Great Slave Lake in Yellowknife, a small but diverse city famous for its spectacular wilderness. Sitting on the edge of the Arctic Circle, the city enjoys summer days with nearly 24 hours of sunlight, and dark winter skies lit up by aurora borealis. Once a gold rush town and now a diamond mining town, Yellowknife is the hub of northern activities, ranging from dog sledding and cross-country skiing to backpacking and birding.

I'm relatively new to quilting, but decided to stop in during my visit to Yellowknife to pick up a souvenir. The staff is super friendly and showed me around the store, including their special Canada / Northern Lights fabrics. They seemed to have everything you could need as a quilter! I picked up some fat quarters and a pair of pillowcase kits that will help us remember our trip.

Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre

Situated in the capital of the Northwest Territories, the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre (PWNHC) produces exhibitions that tell stories about the land, people, and history of the NWT. However, the PWNHC is "more than a museum". In addition to its exhibits, education, collections, and conservation programs, the PWNHC houses the NWT Archives, provides technical, logistic, and financial support to individuals and organizations involved in cultural activities and the arts, and authorizes archaeological studies in the NWT.

This building is stunning and definitely worth stopping to tour. I was one of two people in the tour group (likely because it was the dead of winter and early in the morning) and the tour guide answered all of the questions we could possibly ask about the building, consensus government, governance in the NWT, and relations between the NWT and Nunavut. I love legislature buildings and this was the most stunning one I have ever seen. I was even able to sit in the chairs the officials would sit in. It was a fantastic experience with a well informed guide.

My daughter and I booked a really great staycation workshop and found it to be fun, and informative. Also reasonably priced considering it's about 2 hours and you get a mug or glass which would be $30 anyplace else anyways. The owner, Matthew was fun and catered the workshop to my able 12yr old. A little history of Old town Yellowknife was thrown in for fun. Making it better could be to offer something with the use of one's newly crafted glass---like a coffee in your new mug or whatever. But otherwise---it was a blast and well worth the small expense of take part. And a super friendly thing to do which hasn't changed much since COVID--a rare thing to see these days. I hope these covid restrictions in the NWT are put to bed soon.

Friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff/owners. Not only telling us about the artisans, but also suggested places to see & things to do while we were visiting. Beautiful glow in the dark aurora paintings, mugs, handmade bison wallets, moccasins are a few things you will find here. We went back a few times. Thanks for the advice!
