Saw the brown signs on side of the road and decided to look up winter opening hours and visit, we only had few hours spare before meeting friend so times fit perfect the place was brilliant being a bit of a money geek made it even better. However my husband who never got my geek money thing did not want to do but loved it, Kay was so knowledgable explained everything to us and made talk / tour as inclusive as she could get my son who has additional need to touch the money and involving him in conversation and the exhibit, Kay even shown me some anne wrote ledges they were really interesting the place was fab we loved it well worth visit. We also visited the church where the cross rest but to find out about the cross you need to visit the museum. We will be back to visit again thanks for taking the time to show us your passion Kay, sorry that should be doing your job lol which you clearly enjoy ????

Its a rather small cottage, with displays around the walls on the history of the Worlds first savings bank, while the curator is very knowledgeable about the topic and is more than happy to talk about it :) would definitely recommend a visit if you're in the area

A really fascinating museum run by very enthusiastic volunteers who were only too keen to answer our questions. Brought to life the history of the Dalbeattie area (including displays on quarrying/mining, the wars, shipping)

Ellisland Farm, the rural home of Scottish National Bard Robert Burns, which he built for himself and his family in 1788. The place which inspired him to write some of his most famous poems including Auld Lang Syne and Tam O' Shanter. Visit the room in which he wrote these works and discover more about farm life in rural Dumfriesshire in the late 18th century. Along with the historic house and displays you can also explore the farmyard, farm buildings and take a walk along the river Nith with fabulous displays of flora and wildlife.

Museum of Lead Mining, is situated in Wanlockhead Village, which is the highest village in Scotland, we are 1531 feet above sea level. At the museum we have our Visitor Centre, Tour of Scotland's only real underground Lead Mine, 3 Period Cottages 1750,1850 and 1910. We also have the 2nd Oldest Subscription Library with the original collection of almost 3,000 books, which is the original Miners' collection. This is a Recognised Collection. If you would like to sample Gold Panning you can try one of our taster sessions. After your tour you can sit and relax in our Tearoom and sample the delightful homemade treats on offer, then finally you can visit our Gift Shop which hosts Local Crafts, Minerals, and lots more. Wanlockhead is known as a SSSI Site of Special Scientific Interest.
All the staff are very friendly and informative. We forget just how tough life was back then. On the site is one of the first subscription libraries and it shows the thirst for knowledge.

Discover the remarkable wartime story of the Greatest Munitions Factory on Earth and the extraordinary lives of the Munitions Girls who worked there. Built during WW1, HM Factory Gretna stretched nine miles along the Solway Coast and produced more cordite explosive than all the other factories combined. Through unique objects and interactive displays, our museum brings to life the secret wartime history of Southwest Scotland and Cumbria. Stay and enjoy our Café and free wifi.
Visited here with friends had the welcome talk which gave us an over view spent about one and a half hours here plenty to see about the 2 world wars and the munitions factory interactive displays interesting and worth a visit £5 for concessions and £6 per adult

The board of the museum have decided, as a precaution, to close our museum to visitors with immediate effect, due to the coronavirus. All planned events will be rescheduled once the crisis is over. This action is in line with many other organisations with the aim of helping to delay the spread of the virus and most importantly to help protect our visitors and volunteers. The current closure is for an indefinite period as it is unclear as to the timescale over which the current pandemic will run.
We visit often with our young family and feel at home in this museum with a great team of people. Well worth the visit and highly recommended
