Had to cancel due to getting COVID but was charged full amount (including meals)

Reviewed By John M

I had booked two nights dinner, bed and breakfast with a group of friends, but the day before going, tested positive for COVID. On the day I was meant to arrive, I got a phone call from a gentleman (phoning on behalf of the Manager) demanding full payment of £214 - I had already paid £25 deposit. Whilst I understand it is not unusual for an hotel to charge one night for a no-show, I feel it is unacceptable and greedy to charge for two nights, plus two dinners and two breakfasts I didn’t get.

Relaxing break

Reviewed By whytea18

Just returned from a two night stay at Hetland Hall Hotel, with my sister and mum and we had a great time! We had a deluxe family room (double bed and sofa bed). The room was beautifully decorated, beds super comfy and lovely views over the grounds. The bathroom was moden with a massive walk in shower and spa bath. We had drinks on the terrace both days and it was very relaxing sitting in the sun. We ate breakfast (included in room rate) and dinner on both days. Choice of food was excellent. Breakfast had pastries, fruit, toast etc with choice of cooked breakfast too. Dinner was delicious, over the course of the two days we had goats cheese, tempura, pate, scallops, fish and chips, salmon, burgers and lasagne. Food is served freshly cooked and piping hot! Perfect. My sister would highly recommend the Biscotti dessert which she had both nights. The staff at the hotel were fantastic. The manger on duty (Maggie?) Was very friendly and attentive. A special mention to Scott who was doing a great job especially when it got really busy. Really nice people all round! We would definitely recommend. Thanks for a relaxing stay!

Portpatrick Hotel

Portpatrick is a small fishing village set in a peaceful and unspoilt corner of Southern Scotland. The Portpatrick Hotel is the perfect base from which to explore this delightful area. The Portpatrick Hotel is a spectacular property standing on Galloway’s clifftops in nine acres of grounds, overlooking the village and its secluded harbour. The area is a haven for lovers of sports and the outdoors. You’ll also find a variety of wonderful opportunities for birdwatching and fishing. From the hotel you can enjoy day trips to nearby Stranraer, magnificent historical sites and gardens, or even a trip by ferry to Northern Ireland.

Location good but below average overall

Reviewed By lemec79

Stayed for one night - the location is great, perched on a hill/cliff above Portpatrick, with great views to the village and sea, and the building itself looks fairly attractive. On arrival after 3pm our room wasn't ready for 10 minutes which was irksome and the welcome could've been friendlier. The room we were given (Room 2) was in the basement, approached by a not particularly appealing stair way and corridor. The room itself was quite plain and dreary with stains on the carpet. It didn't actually have a window but rather a windowed door out onto a small patio area. This was the room's saving grace - to be able to open the door and look out on the aforementioned view was pleasant (albeit this was directly located underneath the sit-out area near the bar with accompanying noise). The bathroom was pretty tiny - definitely not comfortable for a long stay, with just some handwash provided. The bed was a bit soft for my liking but I did have a good sleep. The room had tea/coffee, kettle and some biscuits but not much else - and tiny TV on the wall. The dining room was fairly grand and nicely decorated and the menu was okay - not massively varied though. The prices were a little on the expensive side and the sea bass dish I had while nice enough, to me, didn't warrant the cost, and I'm not sure the accompanying sides (turnip and brocolli with a sasla verde) was really the ideal choice. The vegetable lasgane was decent enough. The bar service was fine with £6.95 cocktails and the sit out area offers great views but could do with some more seating. You can access coastal walks directly from the grounds and get down to the village via the stepped path down the cliff (perhaps difficult for those with mobility problems). Overall the stay was acceptable for one night, but based on my experience I wouldn't want to stay there for a longer period and wouldn't want the same room again. I don't think it offered good value for money.

Mixed Feelings

Reviewed By dk2266

Good: • Friendly staff that are welcoming and happy to help • The food is cooked well and definitely worth eating, so no need to go elsewhere as there are not many places to eat other than a pub, pizza express, etc. • Cleanliness of the rooms are great • Location is nice and peaceful • Co-op in walking distance Bad: • Pillows are very uncomfortable and should be replaced ASAP! • Rooms and hallways need to be renovated as they are old and worn out • Only one waitress helping in the morning with breakfast, there should be at least two since she is running around solo. • No air-conditioning in the rooms tl;dr version: From the outside, the hotel looks ok. On the inside however the decor of the hotel hallways and rooms need updating as they are worn down. That being said, key cards are used for the doors which is great. The beds and blankets are comfortable, but the pillows are horrible. I have been to many hotels and I'm not fussy, but I had poor sleep during my stay because the pillows felt like my head was being squeezed, like wearing a helmet that is too small. It sounds weird describing it like that but there's no other way to put it. I kept waking up and falling asleep during the night because of this, so I slept around 5 or 6 hours at most. No air-conditioning either which is disappointing, but you can open the windows to cool off the room. I also couldn't lock the windows in my room, this usually of course isn't a problem unless you have a rooftop next to your window. The room I was in had old windows that you lift, whereas other rooms have normal modern windows. The shower pressure is practically non-existent, so don’t expect a quick shower. There was also no sign to direct people to the other restaurant room for breakfast, so this led to myself and two others lost looking for the breakfast room. Overall, given that I couldn't sleep well which is a fundemental basic of a hotel, I would strongly recommend looking looking at staying somewhere else.

Booked for a two night get away for my wife and I. Arrived to be greeted with polite male member of staff, checked in easy. Room was on the ground floor. Clean room, good size bed. All that’s needed for a short stay. Restaurant was good, the girls working away making sure all guests were catered for even though short staffed they did an amazing job. Breakfast was lovely help yourself set up. With a wide selection to chose from hot or cold. The bar in the lounge area wasn’t open so drinks ordered from the restaurant bar but not able to sit in the lounge area as it was busy, so took up a seat next to the door which was relaxing. Nice location great to just walk around the grounds plus not to far away from the town centre, will defo use again.
