The 10 best Specialty lodgings in Cologne, Germany

April 26, 2023 Rosalyn Ihle

There are 2,000 years of history in Cologne, and visitors here will find everything from Roman towers to Gothic churches to fine examples of modern architecture. Cologne has a variety of museums, too—check out the Museum of Applied Art, the Museum Ludwig and, if you have a sweet tooth, the Chocolate Museum. Be forewarned, though—the gift shop at the latter will utterly ruin your diet.

a&o Cologne Dom

The location of this a&o is as cosy as the bed you’ll be sleeping in: the main railway station is just two minutes away on foot, and Cologne Cathedral is literally steps away. If you find yourself unable to move after a long night of carnival partying, then well, you’ve come to the right place. There are 42 single, double, and family rooms, and like at every a&o, a bathroom with shower/ WC. You enjoy free Wi-Fi throughout the building, and the staff at the reception are always ready to help with a smile.

Too Expensive and Nobodies Home

A private room was over 100 euro per night. The front desk had a lot of trouble finding my booking and asked me to come back to pay several times - but when I did, no one was ever there. Didn’t feel secure. Clean, but tiny and in a super busy part of town, not a very good communal space. Also with the heat, no fan or air con available. Windows attracted a swarm of bugs when opened. It just wasn’t comfortable. I’d been sharing a dorm for just over a week in another city and needed some proper sleep. I didn’t get it.

Black hole in my wallet! AVOID.

We stayed at this place for 3 nights while on a tour through Germany. First things first, we loved the look of this place and how trendy it was but sometimes pictures can be deceiving. So, lets get going! ARRIVAL & CHECK IN - Part 1 We arrived by Car from Amsterdam and came a few hours before check in. We thankfully where able to leave our luggage but not able to check in as the room wasn’t ready. The car park is quite ok and well priced, it’s not totally secure so be sure to remove all your valuables. On arrival we had to wait 10 minutes for anyone to actually come to the desk and then he did come, his English skills where quite challenged even though this venue is a hotel. ARRIVAL & CHECK IN - Part 2 After spending a few hours in Cologne we finally came back to the hotel for the real check in. Again, we needed to wait to be seen for 5-10 minutes and we had the same issue with English skills. We were asked to pay a large proportion up front (so be prepared). There was no breakfast service due to COVID but they did offer Croissants on the main desk in the morning. They also offered a glass of bubbles on arrival but this was really an afterthought not to also mention the glass was filled like 1/3 of the way. THE ROOM (Number 1) On first impression, the room is quite cool and very different from a normal hotel however don’t be fooled by first impressions. - There aren’t enough plug points in the room and positioned in random places. - We had no coffee capsules for the Nespresso machine. - The air conditioning unit is a mobile one where it position in the room didn’t make sense due to the plug positioning and the windows (see the photos) - Our room didn’t have an outdoor window/natural light therefore we had some communal hall which anyone could walk through (shared by other rooms) and wasn’t SECURE at all not to forget we can hear what everyone else is doing. WHEN THE FUN BEGAN! - I go to reception and mentioned we have no coffee but also i need an extension cable for the AirCon because where it is currently positioning I will get sick with having it blow directly on me. I was told, we we don’t have a long cable but we will check out technician and let you know (that never happened) and here is your coffee. Ummm ok! Can I also take an Iron please (see image!), next morning we get set to leave the hotel and I go to use the safe (see photo) and enjoy a day of exploring. THE ROOM (Number 2) So we return to our hotel room after a long day at 21:00 - Oh the room hasn’t been cleaned? But we clearly requested it! (See photo) After speaking with reception, I explained the situation the FOH instructed me on how to request the room was cleaned and told me that someone wouldn’t be available until the next day. They kindly offer to upgrade and move us to the Manhattan room which is their best room (Room 52) Which was very kind of them. So at 21:20 we both pack our stuff and move to the new room…it looks very nice however we notice a smell of cigarette smoke on the second floor of the room, again no coffee and a broken safe. We head back to reception explain the situation and we have a receptionist denying that the room smells of cigarettes (he even goes to check to verify), and informs me that the coffee isn’t an issue. So…they agree that the room isn’t to standard and will move us to the one next to it. THE ROOM (Number 3) Well this room was better, same layout at the previous but not cigarette smell. Again on first impressions, it looks really nice but… - Like in the main hall, lot of pain scratches and missing parts on the walls (see photos). - The shower drainage was slightly blocked which meant water was sitting about for quite some time. - We had to ask reception for the remote for the AC unit, we went on a treasure hunt for 30 minutes to find the correct one. YES, there is NO AC or TV remote in the most premium room. - They did have coffee though! CHECKOUT - Check out was pretty simple though FOH, so no complaints here! She did make a good coffee to go for our trip to Frankfurt. SUMMERY - The overall level of customer service and experience leaves much to desire. This place is all style and no substance! The team really need training in customer service management and they need to hire a great maintenance team! - Look at the small details, even for a 4* hotel, this isn’t acceptable. - Think about disabled access, this place is a nightmare for someone who is a wheelchair user.

In the only hotel in Cologne's traditional Veedel Nippes, guests of the Koncept Hotel Josefine can expect a cosmopolitan mix of art and local scene culture. On the former site of the Clouth Gummiwerke, a 40-room hotel has been created as a meeting place where stories from the neighbourhood are told and new stories are written. The rooms of the Koncept Hotel Josefine, located on the penthouse floor, are modern and timelessly furnished and offer a wonderful view of the Veedel and the city. There is room for encounters with art and culture, guests and locals alike in the open plan lounge and the kiosk, where all friends of the hotel can enjoy themselves day and night. In addition to the perfect transport connections and parking facilities directly at the hotel, the green roof garden with a view of the cathedral and the Veedel is an absolute highlight of the Koncept Hotel Josefine.

Great Place not at all what I expected

Reviewed By Chris L

Like the other reviewer I was here on business for 3 days. This was one of the most relaxing hotel stays I have and in quite awhile. Communication from the hotel after I booked the room was top notch, everything was well communicated in advance. Please make sure you reserve parking as trying to find a spot in the area can take awhile as its a residential area with very crowded streets. The rooms are beautiful, well decorated, and very clean. The room came with a small minibar of snacks and drinks which was appreciated. The wifi is pretty good, much faster than many of the big name hotels I stay at. Then, of course, I had the whirlpool tub, which after a long day is a pretty sweet way to relax. The room looks like it has been recently renovated as the fixtures are all relatively new. The bathroom floor is heated and the walk in shower with raintree is large with great water pressure. The surrounding neighborhood has many options for dining. There is also a number of grocery stores just one block over. This may become my new go to when I am in Koln!

The hotel, newly opened in 2021, offers a total of four room categories: In the Extra Large Rooms, hardly any wish remains unfulfilled. We booked this not knowing about the fact it had no staff but with a little preparation work it was no problem. We checked in online via email sent a couple of days earlier. We received keys by email on day of check in and this worked smoothly. We had one issue with bathroom, we only received one large towel instead of 2, i messaged property on Booking.com in the morning and got a message back and it was left in our room during the day for us. Very near transportation, U bahn station. Very pleased with stay overall and will definitely be back.
