The 10 Best Sights & Landmarks in Northern Norway, Northern Norway

January 24, 2022 Kiesha Cripe

Home to both the midnight sun (with constant daylight from April to July) and the northern lights, North Norway is a rugged land of steep mountains, deep fjords and scenic coastline, making it a great place for outdoor adventures like dog sledding, snowmobiling and wildlife safaris. It's also the ancient home of the Sami people, 3,000 of whom live (along with 100,000 reindeer) at Kautokeino, Norway's largest municipality at over 3,700 square miles.

Really impressive. A „must see“ and unique experience to walk through the dark corridor. The cube with the eternal flame is also very impressive. Unfortunately no translations into other languages available.

Did the North Cape tour off a Hurtigruten cruise. Beautiful and scenic bus trip and then we got to the Cape. Very, very lucky with the weather, clear skies and lots of snow. Got some great photos and would recommend. It would be worthwhile to see in Summer, totally different outlook then.

I passed through Alta on my way to the Nordkapp. This is one of the few UNESCO world heritage sites in Norway and absolutely not to be missed. Take an hour or two and walk down the path from the museum towards the more than 5000 years old stone carvings -- the artistry is really astonishing - and there are lots of carvings ... lots , and lots ! Spend a few quid extra for the Audio guide the audio descriptions are phenomenal and make for the best experience.

Trondenes Church

The world`s northernmost stone church, dating back to the late Middle Ages (1250). The church is set in scenic surroundings and boasts several treasures and a beautiful interior. Guided tours by appointment available year-round.

Reviewed By lobstaluva - Springfield, United States

This sweet little church does not look like much from the outside, but it is a real treasure. From a historical perspective it is the northernmost medieval stone church in Norway and the world’s oldest northernmost surviving building. It was built over the remains of two previous stave churches (from the Vikings) around 1250. It was designed to serve as a sort of fort or safe place as the walls are thick stone and the windows up high. It is one of the largest of the medieval churches, is well preserved, and the exterior is believed to be close to the original. Despite a simple exterior, the inside is quite ornate. Of particular interest are the three Gothic triptychs.....stunning! The pulpit is interesting in Baroque style, and remains of frescoes can be seen. A very interesting, historic church.

The Historical Sjoegata Street

The area around the Sjoegata street in Mosjoen town center is historical. By building, living, shopping and working in the Sjoegata street, people are making history there every day, too, just as they did in the old days. The old buildings in the street are being taken care of as an integral part of the pulsating city life there, giving character to this small town. On your tour of exploration you will find architectural gems and elegantly preserved buildings. Additionally, you will find galleries, an authentic general store, restaurants and a beautiful hotel garden from where you can fish. Architectural conservation work in the Sjoegata street has been honored with a national architecture award and a national environmental award.

What make Mosjøen a better place to stop than the neighboring towns, is this cosy old street. Many artists had exhibitions in several of these houses when we visited.
