St Laurence Church

Great tour of the historic churchyard. Led by very knowledgeable and friendly guide Barbara. Saw monuments to some of the better known residents and heard interesting stories about them and the history of the churchyard. There are over 1400 graves in the churchyard including some Commonwealth War Graves. Would be good if more could be dome to maintain some of the graves/monuments. Had the chance of a quick look around the church before the tour....very beautiful and quite large.... must return to do one of the Church Tours which are apparently held on the first Saturday of each month for much of the year.

The Grange

Family of 7 stayed here in August 2020. Very clean when we arrived. Great quality restoraiton and it is an enchanting experience to be in a house with such history. All the rooms were decorated to a very authentic, high quality standard. The location is great - just outside the property there are some steps down to a beach (lesser known than the main sands and consequently not very busy at all). Sea views from 3 out of 4 bedrooms. The garden is huge and probably could do with some TLC as it was not in a good condition, but deck chairs were provided so that we could sit outside (a garden table/picnic table is the only thing we thought should have been added). House sleeps 8 and there are 4 toilets, 2 showers and 1 bath in total. 2 toilets and a shower room downstairs, 1 bathroom on the 1st floor with the bedrooms and 1 bathroom half way to the tower with a bath and a toilet. The bathrooms (especially the downstairs one) were the only rooms in the house we feel that did not have Pugin's charm in them (maybe could have featured some replicas of his tiles?). Also 2 out of 4 toilets are slighlty novelty (they are wooden benches with holes in them like in the olden days). This was funny but they smelt a bit funny and were not that comfortable to sit on. The beds were very comfortable although it was very hot with the heavy duvet they provided in summer. The kitchen, living room, breakfast room and dining room were all functional and practical. The dining room was probably the most impressive room and it was amaxing eating an evening meal here. The chapel was also very curious although we didn't spend much time here

Turner Rowe Glass Art

Reviewed By Coates-Smith - Barham, United Kingdom

Had an amazing time during the 3 hours lampworking workshop and managed to create lots of amazingly beautiful glass beads under Jo's watchful eye. She was a calm teacher happy to explain as much of the science behind the art as you want her to and also happy for you to creatively explore making glass beads. Her space is calming and full of inspiration and a beautiful dog! Will definitely be returning to have another go!

The Shell Grotto

Pre-booking essential. The Shell Grotto is one of the world’s most mysterious places: a series of underground rooms and passageways covered by 2000sqft of exquisite mosaic created with 4.6 million shells. Discovered in 1835, nobody knows who created it, when, or why. “The grotto is simultaneously haunting and homely. It could be a lost pagan shrine or have ‘A Present From Margate’ picked out in the shells - it wouldn’t matter. It’s still magical, mysterious and (once it’s in your head) impossible to forget.” Far From the Sodding Crowd: More Uncommonly British Days Out, Penguin Books.

Margate Tudor House

The Tudor house in Margate, thought to be one of the oldest of its kind in Kent, was open to the public on selected dates during the 2006 summer season.Situated in King Street, it was built around 1525 and is typical of many houses of that period. It’s believed that the Tudor House would have been one of the largest buildings in Thanet and would probably have belonged to a wealthy yeoman farmer. At the time of building, it would have stood close to the bank of the stream which ran down Dane Valley and entered the sea where Margate Harbour now is.The oldest deed can be traced back to 1802, when the Tudor House was a farmhouse owned by Francis Cobb. In 1815, the building was converted into three cottages and the lower part of the exterior of the Tudor House was plastered over, while inside the oak panelling was covered with wallpaper and the beams were plastered over.During the Second World War, the roof was damaged and vibration from bombs led to it tilting forwards. In 1951, restoration work started to return the house to its former glory, when the panelling was completely restored and the windows and doorframes were re-situated.

We visited the Tudor house, not realising it was actually closed to the public at the time. The door was open so we went in and nearly scared the life out of Cliff, the volunteer who was practicing Tudor compositions on the keyboard. Fortunately, he was kind enough to give us a tour around the house and was really knowledgeable and passionate about its origins and the background to Tudor life there. He played some music of the period for us and showed us the fantastic replica costumes that have been lovingly handmade upstairs. It's clear that the volunteers here work hard to make the house interesting and informative for kids too and it's a great way for them to learn about the times. It's fantastic that such a house has been so well preserved. We really enjoyed our visit. A big thank you!

Sailors Church

Reviewed By margaretp306

Just go. It’s such an unusual church, totally about and for the sailors of the fishing port of Ramsgate. We stumbled across it years ago and always look in when passing by. Don’t expect grand, blousy or huge. Just think of simple and much needed in days gone by. Dont forget to leave a donation as they have to keep it going.....even though you won’t necessarily be there for long
