We re-visit Grimspound every few years because it's probably the best example of an Iron Age settlement in easy reach of a road. The wall is intact. The house outlines with the draft-excluding shell shapes show how peoples of that time lived on the moor. Walk up to the neighbouring tor to get a better view. More adventurous walkers park at the Warren Inn and talk the trail across the moor. If you only visit one ancient site on Dartmoor, make it Grimspound.

Enjoying a profound sense of calm and quiet, buried deep in a Devon valley, Buckland Abbey has been a home for hundreds of years. The Cistercian monks who founded this abbey in the later 13th Century led a life of religious contemplation and fruitful toil, working the land and tending their animals. Passed into private hands after Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries, Buckland Abbey underwent a major conversion to become the grand home of rich and famous seafarers, including Sir Francis Drake. For all that has changed over 750 years, Buckland is a place that has kept its air of peace and tranquility for modern day pilgrims to enjoy.
Very informative and interesting, full of history and certainly learnt more about Sir Francis Drake, the tithe barn well worth visiting, and most beautiful gardens, with good cafe it makes a very enjoyable day. Found the staff very helpful.

Holiday Accommodation in The Dartmoor National Park. Fly and Float Fishing for Trout. Fly Fishing Tackle Shop. Farm Animals.
I have using this fishery for over 25 years although I’ve seen the cottages I’ve never stayed in them before! We arrived on a cold damp winters evening and moved straight into our beautiful cottage Jack’s Den which the owner had made sure was all warm a snug by having the heating on prior to our arrival! The cottages are fantastically equipped and beautifully decorated. The beds are extremely comfortable which meant during our two nights stay we both slept amazingly well. We are both very much looking forward to another stay in the very near future. Thanks Abigail and all at Tavistock Trout Fishery

The Miniature Pony Centre, Dartmoor is a great ‘hands-on’ family day out filled with lots of cuteness and pony magic for children and adults alike. Home to over 80 equines from gigantic mammoth donkeys and heavy horses to Miniature Shetlands and Miniature Mediterranean Donkeys, this is animal lover’s idea of heaven.
Really enjoyed our time here. We walked all around including the petting area which we thought would be purely for children but we were included too. The staff are knowledgeable and it was interesting. We watched the children having their pony rides and then went into the large paddock where the ponies just wander around. There were some young foals which were very cute and lots of petting. There is also a walk-in around a large pond and we sat on a bench watching the ducks and moorhens, very peaceful and relaxing. We also sampled the food in the on-site cafe which was generous and tasty. This is a lovely place to visit especially with children, wish our own grandchildren had been with us.

We visited Pennywell with our 6 and 11 year old. We had last visited 5 years ago. It was a fantastic day with activities every half hour. It meant there was not much time to try out some of the other things on offer but we wanted to make the most of the more ‘hands-on’ experiences. We arrived at 10.15am and left as the farm was closing at 5pm...we could have easily spent a few more hours here. We cuddled baby pigs, Guinea pigs, rats, bottle fed baby goats, milked a goat, collected eggs, met a hedgehog, watched ferret racing and pig racing...the kids loved the red rocket ride and tractor and trailer ride...they also loved the assault course...my sons highlight was walking a goat which was so much fun...there was also an indoor bouncy castle area that went down a great. Our farmer Becca was amazing...informative, friendly and making sure everyone got a chance to do the activities...we also loved Izzy on the tractor ride. The show with Mr Phil was hilarious... What a great family day out with lots of memories made...thanks Pennywell. I’m so pleased that you have not lost your charm or family feel which was there when I visited as a child myself...
