Old time comfort

Reviewed By Brian K

The Bedford is beautifully British. This old building [ but with modern services] is a bit like staying in a manner house. Great restaurant. You have to have a drink or tea out in the walled garden, its quiet , green, peaceful and even with a short stay is worth relaxing and enjoying. Good parking if your driving and beside the historical canal with its lovely walks. Also only a minute or two to the shopping district.

Our third visit - and definitely not our last

Reviewed By Nicesoapdoesmatter

We first stumbled on the Mill End Hotel a few years ago when looking for a good (dog friendly) place to stop off on our way to Cornwall. We loved it so much we've been back several times (and we don't bother driving on to Cornwall anymore). The quality of the food seems to go up a notch with every visit. The menu is always imaginative and utterly delicious. Every course has something to love. The rooms are all very comfortable, well decorated and well maintained. The garden is super for a post walk drink, lunch or even afternoon tea. The location is stunning. We have two dogs who were in 7th heaven romping through the Teign valley. It's super to be able to walk along the river to Fingle Bridge in one direction, up to Castle Drogo or across to Chagford in the other direction. This has become a favourite destination because we know we'll always have a great experience.

An Outstanding Country House Hotel

Reviewed By JOHN T

We have stayed at The Ilsington Country House Hotel at least once a year since it first opened which is a testimony to how much we enjoy its beautiful surroundings, relaxed atmosphere, comfortable surroundings and excellent cuisine. It thoroughly deserves the AA Four Star Country House Hotel and the AA Two Rosettes for Culinary Excellence it has received in 2022. As a hotel it has all the qualities one would expect from a well run family hotel, not least a warm and friendly welcome. The awards it has received are a fitting tribute to the dedication of Richard Hassell and his team

Richard is an excellent host and really helpful. Always up for a chat and thinking with you to find a perfect hike with you. The accommodation was really nice and perfectly located to enter several hikes easily and next to the best pub of princetown. I also enjoyed the breakfast; it was delicious and there were a lot possibilities for personal preference (glass of milk and ommelet with good gadgets).

First of all, only had Sunday menu, which was very disappointing, did ask for another menu but was told that was the only one. Unlike when we went the first time a year previously. This should have been my birthday treat Would like to say menu items uninspiring, and unimaginative, middle of range in respect of price. My family mostly enjoyed food, but then they just don't write reviews, unlike myself. Mine was below the standard to some of the other places I have eaten. Jus,(gravy) was very sweet but overall portion on main course was good. Starters reminded me of the sixties and pudding school. For food I give 7/10 due to no variety and other faux Pas. If I would go again I'm not sure! Staff I must say we're very busy and did a excellent job,but a bit rushed off feet to really pay attention to customers,so for them I give ten out of ten.

Terrible night with no sleep, don't book room 8!

Reviewed By Fairness4allplease

We stayed in room 8 which is next to an extractor and plant room which sounded like a cross channel ferry engine. I was assured this would be turned off at 9pm, I asked reception to turn it off at 10.30pm, it stayed on all night so we go NO SLEEP at all. The staff were all very friendly but when we reported this issue at check out, they suggested we book a different room next time. There won't be a next time, at nearly £220 for dinner b&b we won't ever be back. Very disappointing.
