A 3 Dressed Up as a 5

We stayed there from May 31 - June 7. As it's low season, the hotel was about 40% full during the week. On the weekend it got busier, but we never had problems getting a lounge chair. The grounds are lovely. Everything was centrally located which made getting around very easy. The pool is a great place to hang out and we met some great people. The rooms are average. Clean and comfortable, but basic. Beware of the shower curtain that clings to you as you attempt to shower. The internet was hit or miss. Often one of us in the party wouldn't be able to get online. This is important for filling out ArriveCan and the e-ticket to leave the DR. The food is average, the buffet repetitive. The tables are usually only half set up with missing silverware/glasses/salt and pepper so you start cannibalizing other tables for them. The service was not great either. But you won't go hungry. One problem was the milk for coffee/tea. Several times it produced chunks in my tea. You'd think they'd fix it after a couple of complaints, but it kept happening. And if you're a tea drinker, bring your own teabags. The ones they had were not great. I will give two thumbs up for the dessert in the steak house (chocolate volcano) and in the Japanese restaurant (deep fried ice cream). Both were fantastic, and if I could have gotten away with it, I would have licked the plates. The BIG Issue The hotel has a time share section. The concierge staff are there to offer assistance and book your a la cartes, but also to get you to view a time share (code words: VIP Breakfast, "When did you get here?"). So what's the big deal - in all the bars there is selection of spirits on display that are ONLY for the VIP Members. You can see them, you just can't have them. Want a bourbon? Sorry, it's just for the VIPs. We really felt like second class guests.

This was our 3rd visit. This time of year is not busy at all. We had fun in the pool, and it was nice for it to be less crowded than before. However I believe because it’s slow the entertainment extremely lacked. Along with the food. It was almost the same thing every single day - which is as before, this was not the case. I noticed they would reuse some of the same food from the previous day but just make it “look” different. I work in a restaurant myself and am food safety certified. I know that we try our best to control food waste so we don’t lose money - However, I believe that is unacceptable to serve the same vegetables and possibly rice that was not eaten prior more than once . I don’t really think that’s food safe. My husband got very sick from the food as well. I usually don’t complain but this just really bothered me. Our prior experiences with the food was great however. I believe when there’s more people there - the more fresh food they serve. The staff was great and overall it was a very peaceful trip. We had fun and we’re able to enjoy our time. If we come again, I will make sure to come during a more busier time for better entertainment and experience. I also did notice that the WiFi was better this trip and was able to use the WiFi by the pool and bar with no problem. That was awesome. For travelers, make sure you take a walk down the beach as they have a street with ice cream, pizza, sushi bar, etc.

Mi CASA

Reviewed By RayzeR-CDN

I stayed 2 weeks at the SELECT (Adults Only) side of Casa Marina Resort in Sosua. It was my first time visiting DR and this resort. The resort lived up to the expectations. I had a Gardenview room in the select area (building 1) on the top floor. The room was a bit "hot" even with the AC running, but not a huge deal to me. The lower floors were allegedly cooler. The weather was absolutely amazing with nearly NO rain at all and almost 30C every day in late January. Amazing. The ocean was calm most days but when I first arrived the Red Flags were up and the swell was HUGE. As the ocean calmed, the resort was a bit slow to take down the Red and then Yellow Flags. You can jump in from the rocks on the right side!! The food in the one Adults Only restaurant (Hermans) was good. Make reservations in the mornings. I didn't care for the other restaurants. Buffet breakfast was fine but need BACON everyday. The servers around the Select Pool were great. The Wrap de Pollo was a fantastic lunch. Presidente on tap, and a few Models and Coors cans in the room fridge. Reaort should amend its policy of "Men Need Sleeves" to enter the buffet. Times have changed and if women can enter in a tank top I should be able to also enter in a tank top - especially for breakfast!! Like cmon. As this was in the height of Omicron, the resort did do well in its policies and departure testing. Hopefully this won't be needed on next visit!! :) The best part of the resort is its proximity to Sosua the town on the doorstep. Had great times off-resort enjoying the flavors and culture of area bars and restaurants. I will definitely be back (to the SELECT side) of this resort!

Velero Beach Resort

Velero Beach Resort was the first luxury Cabarete hotel to be built and the visionary architect chose the best location on the entire beach to build. Our grounds are sheltered from the wind for the non-windsurfers, but 5 meters into the water the windsurfer or kiter will have access to the trade winds. Velero Beach Resort is the only one of the Cabarete hotels to have a small reef right out front that forms shallow tidal pools at low tide. These are perfect for the toddlers to play in protected from the waves. Our restaurant is also the only one in Cabarete that is directly on the water for perfect sunsets!

Beautiful resort but unsafe with poor security

Reviewed By RichNic67

A beautiful resort with ‘most’ of the staff very friendly and helpful, great food and drinks and we loved the daily happy hour however, at the beginning of our second week we suffered a robbery. All of our cash, travel documentation including passports, jewellery and other items which had been ‘safely’ locked in the in-room safe were taken along with the safe! Yes the entire safe was stolen, it was literally ripped out of the wardrobe! Initially both Security and Reception staff seemed disinterested stating that we would need to speak to the apartment owner. To this day neither the hotel or the apartment owner have assisted us in claiming against their insurance or recouping our losses for what was woefully inadequate security (contracted by the owners and the hotel). We noted that other resorts in Cabarete employed several armed Security Guards and had locked gates, with anyone venturing close to the perimeter robustly challenged, this was sadly not the case at Velero Beach resort. We did not like to see armed Guards but following our experience this would clearly deter any trespassers or thieves! Velero Beach resort had a beach access gate which was unlocked and open during daylight hours and on a daily basis we noted people who clearly were not guests eating at the poolside restaurant and using the pool! The apartment owner was helpful and over the next few days took us to Police Stations and translated for us and arranged for a taxi to take us on the 9 hour round trip to the British Embassy in Santa Domingo to collect Emergency Travel Passports. Despite the thief (not a local but a caucasian male appearing to be in his early 20’s) being caught on camera fleeing the scene with the safe (sadly only visible from behind and we have not been provided with any footage of him entering or leaving the apartment, despite several requests), he has not been caught although security was markedly stepped up the day after the robbery with increased patrols, additional lighting and cameras installed and foliage around the apartment cleared, sadly all too late for us! Disappointingly, despite there being an owners meeting the morning after the robbery, not one of the seriously wealthy owners offered to financially assist us in any way, despite us being left without cash or credit cards with many actually saying to a fellow guest that it “wasn’t their problem”! Very disappointing and thank god for the help of our family. Our awful second week was finally capped when we arrived at the airport to fly home. The Emergency Travel Passport would not link with the airport system and it took almost 3 hours to resolve the issue. Thankfully the amazing West Jet Captain delayed the plane for us and the very helpful check in Supervisor managed at the last minute to successfully check us in! A very stressful, upsetting and traumatic second week which has destroyed any chances of us ever returning to Velero Beach or the Dominican Republic.
