The 10 best Ranches in Lazio, Italy

April 26, 2023 Leonarda Pillsbury

Lying at Italy’s geographic and historic heart, Lazio (or Latium) was the seat of the Roman Empire, and as such is teeming with ancient attractions, especially in the Eternal City of Rome itself. To the east, Tivoli has Emperor Hadrian’s exquisite and massive Villa Adriana. Civitavecchia, today a major cruise and ferry port, has been Rome’s main harbor since the second century. Many pre-Roman sites dot Lazio too, like the Etruscan necropolis at Cerveteri, dating from the 9th century BC.

Too nice to leave....

Reviewed By 15Claire15

If there was a negative to our stay here it was, as the title says, that it was too nice to leave. I had plans for our stay in the area and they almost all went out of the window in favour of wandering round the stables and lazing by the pool. We walked into Viterbo every day and took the bus once but other than that just enjoyed the place. We had a little kitchen area so in the evenings we stayed home and ate there after lunching out. This meant that the fact we were carless and a little way out of town did not matter at all, especially as Anna gave us a lift both ways when we arrived and left. The accommodation in general was great, the bed was comfy and we slept late because the room was so dark thanks to the shutters, bliss. Breakfast too was very nice. If you are looking for a place to relax after a hectic time in Rome choose here you won't be disappointed.

Amazing place and community at Italy Farm Stay! Surrounded by beautiful scenery and an amazing walk to Sora! The food is excellent and the fellow volunteers and guests were incredible in the month stay I had. I strongly recommend this place for guests looking for a get away or change of scenery and also for people looking to volunteer, learn new techniques, and experience Italian culture!

Podere Orto

You will find us in what we like to call the “Trivium”: an unspoilt, borderless area nestling amid three regions, where Lazio touches upon Umbria and Tuscany, on the edges of the Monte Rufeno nature reserve and just a few kilometres from the renowned San Casciano dei Bagni hot springs, surrounded by centuries of culture and the ever changing colours of the seasons. The vineyard, which sits on unspoilt land at an altitude of 600m a.s.l., is the result of a rigorous massal selection. No chemical fertilisers are used. Weed control and most of the work in the vineyard is carried out by hand. The wine is fermented without the use of additives, in our own small wine cellar, where it is then bottled without filtering. No additional treatments are used to alter the natural composition of the vineyard’s three wines. The rates include a rich breakfast with a selection of organic local products and a guided wine tour (vineyard and winery.) Top-quality local cheese and ham tasting with Podere Orto wines are available.

A REFUGE IN THE NATURE The authenticity of the countryside in its simplicity and spontaneity welcome you to discover the origins and traditions of the authentic Italian culture of rural life. A return to frugality and the exaltation of the passage of time marked by the nature: the crowing of the cock, the first rays of sun refracting in the fresh morning dew, the awakening of nature and animals, the loving care of the factor, which in every season renews his tacit agreement signed between nature and man. All this means to live on a farm, experience that even for one night only brings back the spirit to its bucolic origins.

A place of peace

I've been at Agrihouse in September 2019 for four days to take part of a four-day yoga kundalini retreat. The place is absolutely amazing, just hills and grass and trees around. The silence is interrupted just by the sound of the wind passing throught the leaves. Many animals (dogs, cats, cows and many more..) as pleasant company. A nice swimming pool with a view. Breakfast is simple but good. Rooms with no tv but in my opinion not needed in a place like this! The family who run the place is so welcoming and warm, they're so friendly and helpful! Bracciano is 10 mins by car and there is a bus 5/6 times a day running beetwen Bracciano and the Agrihouse.. the place is surrounded by nature but well connected. Recommended!

The staff is extremely nice and accompanied, I’m vegan and they were friendly and find perfect alternatives for me! The pool is nice, with a garden area. You can reach the lake in less than 10 minutes. And the prices are incredible, great value for the accommodation and the food!! Recommended! My personal advice for the owners is to believe in your place more! It’s a gem!!! With a little more details it could reach a really high level!!

A New Year's Eve I will never forget - A haven from the craziness of Rome.

Reviewed By yorkiebar23

Lovely apartment with a small kitchen and large shared terrace over looking Rome and Lazio. Stunning views - was there for New Years Eve and was stunned by the spectical of the fireworks (that lasted for 1 1/2 hours!) Quite countryside location, so you really need your own transport. It's a 15 mins drive to the local train station with free parking. It's a 30 min train ride to St Peter's Station in the centre of Rome. You pass a Spar on the way if you fancy cooking instead of eating out. The only complaints were the towels could have been replaced more often. The kitchen could do with some more crockery and utensils (only 1 knife). Apart from that it was fabulous. Oh and the apartment had heating which was great for a winter stay.

Agriturismo La Vecchia Fattoria

Located on the secondary road to Amelia, on the borderline between Umbria and Latium, "La vecchia fattoria" is an ideal place of peace and relax. The agrotourism overlooks a valley of olive trees, and from the farmhouse you can catch downstream our beautiful, natural pool, surrounded by the green Tiber countryside. Corners of unespected suggestion hide away in the spaces crowning our hill, where you can allow yourself a break enclosed by olive trees, aromatic herbs, vineyards and soft fruits.

Peaceful agriturismo with nice rooms, great views and excellent food.

We stayed in the Apartment Red and Apartment Brown during our one week stay at Agriturismo Vecchio Fattoria. Apartment Red is a spacious 1 bedroom (double + single) with a separate kitchen, dining and living area (with pull out futon), large bathroom and large terrace overlooking the pool. Apartment Brown has 2 large bedrooms with 2 bathrooms (1 en suite), small kitchen area, and small terrace. Marco and his staff were gracious and helpful throughout our stay. This agriturismo offers an excellent and varied lunch and dinner menu, with a small breakfast buffet offering a selection of fruit, cakes, pastries and preserves. Coffee and tea were available throughout the day. The antipasti, pastas, and grilled meats (many with fresh mushrooms or truffles) were all excellent, as was the small wine selection. We loved the large pool overlooking the valley, with a good choice of chairs and loungers (some with shade), and our kids loved the daily stroll to visit the farm animals (chickens, ducks, geese, donkeys and goats). The location is less than a 90 minute drive from Rome, and an excellent base from which to explore the sights of Lazio and Umbria, including the nearby hill town of Orte, the Roman ruins and papal palace of Viterbo, the 500 year-old parco dei mostri (monster park) at Bomarzo, the stunning Umbrian hill town of Todi, and the Umbrian cultural and wine centers of Montefalco and Orvietto.
