The Bergen Railway

Experience one of Europe’s most beautiful train journeys. The Bergen Line is the scenic mountain track to the fjords.

In hindsight, this might have been a trip better done in the Spring or Summer, mainly because when there has been a lot of snow everything is white. Where there would be glistening blue lakes and green landscape, there is no delineation since the lakes are frozen and covered in snow, as is the land. Having said that, still a great experience with some friendly co-travellers and comfortable seating in Komfort class with free tea and coffee. Note that in 2020 all Komfort class carriages are being replaced with a new Pluss carriage which has upgraded facilities and at-seat power. I might just have to go back in the Summer!

I downloaded the App prior to setting off and bought my tickets on the app. Each journey is a single and it loads on the app. From there it is easy to put it into your iPhone wallet, the ticket is valid for 90 days. The app displays train times and platform number; at busy Oslo Central Station that made it quick and easy to find. The Airport station is well signposted, simply select your ticket and scan the barcode before entering the platform, it is worth knowing that on the return journey to the airport you scan the barcode when you arrive at the airport after leaving the train. I love the simplicity of the system, the airport is a long way out from the city centre and this is a great way of travelling at a reasonable cost. Trains are about every 10 minutes and travel time is about 30 minutes, the train is comfortable and quiet and you also get the opportunity to see the countryside outside the city.

We travelled on the train from Narvik, Norway to Kiruna, Sweden. This area is inside the Arctic Circle and I describe the area as Newfoundland meeting Banff, Alberta, Canada for the scenery. The Land of the Midnight Sun is a true description.

We took NSB service to/from Oslo airport to City. We used Nationaltheatret (National Theatre) station and Oslo Lufthavn (Oslo airport). From National Theatre station it comes in track 3 or 4 and runs 18, 28 and 48 past every hour from National Theatre - weekdays mornings - this was May 2018. We took 9:28 R10 service and it was three stops and takes about 30min. Tips: 1) I recommend taking the train from National Theatre station (if you are going to airport) as the train got crowded from the Oslo Central station. Travelling with two children on my own this was a good choice. 2) You can buy tickets for NSB service to airport using RuterBillett app - it's 4zones and 101 NOK. I think if you buy not using app (counters) it's more expensive. 3) use NSB service cheaper than FlyToGet express train (runs with F numbers but more frequent service). If not for my friend saying this I would have got on the FlyToGet service as it is the more frequent and visible/ promoted one 4) if traveling with children at weekends, kids travel free in this service.
