Bokkerfjellet

The mountain Bøkkerfjellet is located in the centre of Larvik. From the old fire lookout post, the tower keepers could view the whole town in the good, old days. The view is fantastic from here, and the site is easily accessible. A Norwegian "bøkker" was in the good, old days a barrel maker.

This is an excellent place to visit to stroll, look at the boats, see people and of course have a drink or a meal. It is highly reccomended in summer, in spring or fall when the sun is out, or even in winter to experience the cozy ambience. In summer the sun will set over the low hills to the northwest, quite late in the eveneing. So come and experience the long summer evenings like a Scandinavian. It is also buzzing for lunch. Scandinavians will jump at any excuse to sit outside in the sun! A lot of them bring friends for a "halvliter", a pint, but my husband and I usually settle for sparkling water and coca-cola, and a light meal. If you are quite young, and perhaps single, the action starts late.. after 10PM, but people of all ages go there for a drink and a meal in the early evening any day of the week. As we are an older couple, we prefer to head for home before 11, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. That is when the young crowd turn out in droves. If you are boating there are many berths, both along the quay and a little furter up where there is a little marina with many berths and shower and WC facilities. I have no idea what it costs these days.. There should be a sign or two. Someone will show up to take your money. :-) If you moor along the quay on the weekend, don't expect to have a good nights sleep. In summer that is party-time! The busiest season in Norway is medio June until medio August. In August it CAN start to be a little chilly at night .. or you can experience a Norwegian heatwave .. you never know!

Castle Rock Tower

The present tower on Castle Rock was built in 1888 after the first tower, built by the Tonsberg Maritime Club in 1856, burned to the ground. The original cross from the Church of Our Lady can be seen in the tower. Cato Engers model of the castle Castrum Tunsbergis has been casted in bronze and has it's place close to the tower. Mail dispatched from Castle Rock Tower has its own postmark with a special motif. The tower is 17 m high. There are three royal inscriptions on the tower.

It´s a tower. But magnificent both from a distance (lighted up in the evening) and close by for shadow in the summer. This is a rebuild, and close by there is a model of the whole castle. Tønsberg is norways oldest town.

Colin Archers House at Tollerodden

Colin Archer (1832-1921) was a boat builder and a boat designer from Larvik. He grew up in Kirkestredet 9, in a house that today is beutifully restored with some wonderful baroque decoration from the 1700s. Colin Archer had Scottish parents, but was born in Larvik. He grew up in one of the oldest houses in Larvik. His fully restored childhood home in Kirkestredet at Tollerodden was built in 1668. It is one of the oldest houses in town, and it is uniquely situated by the Larvik fiord. Some of the most valuable antiquarian buildings are situated on the property, and in the main building you will find some rare 300-year old baroque decoration. In summer you can enjoy a cup of tea at the cafe outside the main building, and there are also concerts in the front garden in the summer season. The 343-year old house earned the Larvik city council preservation prize in 2007. During the 1850s Colin Archer and his wife built Lilleodden at Kirkestredet 11, next door to his childhood home. Here Archer developed his ideas and designed his boats. Colin Archer is well known for constructing the vessel Fram, and for his rescue ships. He was responsible for building 14 rescue ships and, all in all, more than 200 boats.
