The 10 Best Other Outdoor Activities in Algarve, Portugal

September 14, 2021 Marianna Hollaway

The Algarve's sunny shores offer perfect escapes for all types, from those seeking the hot nightlife of flashy, energetic Lagos to those desiring secluded stays in rambling Sagres. Portugal's most southerly region offers historical attractions in former Moorish capital Silves and fascinating Tavira, great golf, fabulous beaches from Praia da Luz to Armacao de Pera, thermal springs at Caldas de Monchique, and miles of limestone caves and grottoes, cliffs and bays along its rugged coastline.

Olheiros de Agua Doce

The name "Olhos d'Agua" is derived from various underwater freshwater springs that flow into the sea, along the beach, the sand and rocks. Only visible when it is low tide. These famous "olheiros" gave the town its name. A phenomenon of rare beauty and a major tourist attraction. Here settled Phoenicians, Carthaginians, and Romans, who practiced fishing and developed salting and drying of fish. It is a tradition go to olheiros and taste the water.

Praia do Beliche

Reviewed By NickW3682 - Mangawhai Heads, New Zealand

I used to go to this beach many years ago and much to my delight...not much has changed. It still has the steep steps down to the beach, beautiful golden sand, lovely clean water with perfectly shaped waves for body surfing or surfing. Since I was last here, they have built a beach bar which has made the experience even better. And now there are surfers, lots of surfers....but there is plenty of room for everyone so it does not detract. There are also surf lifeguards now. There is still one beach which is clothes optional and the whole place has a really good chilled vibe. Totally worth the trip down and up the stairs. The only things to be aware is it can be hard to find parking at the top of the cliff on a hot day and the water can be on the cool side (It is the Atlantic!). This beach is why I came back to Sagres and is why I will go back there in the future. It is so good I am regretting writing this review if it means more people will go there.
