Laurissilva Forest

This type of wild and scenic forest landscape is fast becoming a rare sight along the Mediterranean, and Madeira is one of the few places where they still exist.

The laurissilva is a beautiful and mystical part of Madeira. From Ribeiro Frio you can do a really easy (flat) and relaxing levada walk to Balcoes (balcony) that will end at a 'balcony' overlooking the surrounding area. I definitely recommend doing that walk when you are in the neighborhood.

Centro De Recuperacao Do Lobo Iberico

The Iberian Wolf Recovery Centre (IWRC) is a sanctuary for wolves who are unable to survive in the wild. It was started in 1987 with the objective of providing a suitable environment and safe haven for wolves. While providing its resident wolves with the best available care, the IWRC aims to create awareness of the wolf in its natural state as well as in captivity. In the visits you will have the opportunity to learn more about the iberian wolf: the biology, ecology, behaviour and pack life, and the threats that face this elusive predator. The enclosures that the wolves occupy are large and densely vegetated and therefore we cannot guarantee their observation. The IWRC is open to the public for guided visits on Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays. All visits are subject to booking. The visits are made on foot through the public portion of the sanctuary and take about 90 minutes. Visiting hours: Winter (October to April) visits at 3:00pm and 4:30pm Summer (May to September) visits at 4:00pm and 6:00pm Visits are held in Portuguese. Bilingual visits are possible but are subject to booking and occur at 4:30pm in the winter and 6:00pm in the summer.

Do not expect to get up close and personal with the wolves, this is a sanctuary and they are wild animals. But by visiting the sanctuary you are definitely supporting a good cause, propagate education about the Iberian wolf and if you're lucky you can see one of the residents. We loved the tour. It was interesting, all our questions were answered and the guide was a true lover of nature. You not only learn about wolves but also about their habitat and the myths that surround them. As a bonus we saw one wolf from afar and one from quite close by. They are beautiful creatures and we can only hope they get the protection they deserve.

Priolo Environmental Center

The Interpretation Centre of Priolo was developed by SPEA in partnership with SRAM (Regional Secretariat of Environment and Sea) and DRRF (Regional Direction of Forestry Resources) during LIFE Priolo Project. Its mission is to raise awareness for the "Priolo" and its habitat, the Laurel Forest. "Priolo" is one of most threatened birds in Europe, existing only in the east part of the Island of São Miguel, where several actions to preserve and guarantee its survival have been carried, since 2003. Objectives: 1. Reception and information center for all visitors to the SPA ZPE Pico da Vara/Ribeira do Guilherme. 2. Create an activity program, aimed to the local population, that can contribute to improve their knowledge and awareness about native species in the Açores. 3. Offer an interesting educational program for schools all over the Azores. 4. Encourage sustaintable development in the region by selling local handcraft and alimentar products, and by developing Eco-tourism. 5. Develop a group of partners and volunteers, that can contribute to the conservation of the Priolo and its habitat. 6. Develop a structure to encourage research on the SPA Pico da Vara/Ribeira do Guilherme. The centre has many activities for the visitors all year round. Visitors will have access to an interactive exhibition that will help to have a better understanding of the flora, fauna and conservation actions present in the SPA Pico da Vara /Ribeira do Guilherme. The center also has a specially designed children area in which they can do activities related to Priolo and Azorean Laurel Forest.

Recomendo vivamente. All I have is wonderful things to say about this place! We arrived and were greeted with a delicious Poncha (tradicional alcoholic drink). The staff was very friendly, available and ready to help (we were a big family with children and a baby, and quickly made themselves available to get another table that we could be more comfortable with). The food was divine (I highly recommend ribs and meat skewer in a laurel stick). The wine was also very good. After lunch we went with the children to fish trouts. Once again the staff was tireless and very kind. It became one of my favorite places on the island! I highly recommend it.

Levada Caldeirao do Inferno

Reviewed By CaptChaos179 - Winchester, United Kingdom

We planned to do this as an extension of the Caldeira Verde. They final waterfall although not as full and flowing as Verde has it owns charm and their are many delights along the way. It is around 2.5 hours extra on top of the Verde taking photos and a brief lunch stop. The Levada walk has been greatly improved over last year or so, it is there fore not as dangerous as some would have you believe. It does have quite a hard climb half way along (when you get to the railway tracks it is over) One of our group got vertigo on the next bit - the usual drop to the side but still the safety wires but the Levada briefly widens significantly here perhaps making them feel more exposed. If anyone does not want to continue they can admire the views and wait for you to return on the way back. There are many tunnels (but not lower than Verde but wetter and more uneven. The second of the bridges by the two waterfalls in crag between the has dodgy metal planks so you may want to straddle the beams as the planks move a lot, make sounds but didn't give way. You hear these feeder waterfalls from the beginning of a long tunnel building the expectation. The final climb to Inferno is a little rocky but pleasant and you reach your destination. All you have to do is return by the same route. The views and experi noes are even better than the Verde and thinking about men hanging from ropes from the top of the mountain to hack out the Levadas by hand will have you in awe and respect. A bucket list walk

Really enjoyed the walk across to end of the headland. Rock formation is fascinating. Great views. Dolphins seen in the bay. Tip - the excellent path is rough in places and I would recommend wearing good trainers or walking boots to support your feet.
