I took the Midori Huis Ten Bosch Ltd Express train from Hakata Station to Sasebo station using my 3 day unlimited JR North Kyushu Rail Pass. After wandering around town a bit, I rode the local Matsuura Tetsudo Railway from NakaSasebo station ( high up a long narrow flight of stairs ) to Sempukuji station. From there I set off on foot to find Spectacles Rock. Luckily I have basic Japanese language skills and I was able to ask some locals for directions. It was a bit of a walk. But with their help and my Android phone's Google maps, I found the place. I was speechless. An awe-inspiring sight. It was a little creepy, like a huge human skull. Truly a sight never to be forgotten.

Aso-san, the symbol of Kumamoto Prefecture, is the largest compound volcano in Japan, situated in the central part of Aso Kuju National Park. The central cone group consists of five peaks, the highest 1592-meter Taka-dake, still active – – Naka-dake, Neko-dake, Eboshi-dake, and Kishima-dake. This mountain boasts arguably the largest caldera in the world, extending 25 kilometers in the north-south direction and 18 kilometers in the east-west direction. Kokonoe Yume Otsurihashi Bridge

Reviewed By bona_tiger

This suspension bridge offers view of three differently sized waterfalls. Scenic view, perhaps more spectacular with the mountains covered with autumn leaves. Scary to view the valley bottom from the middle section. Admission fee included a small free souvenir picture. Allow 40 mins for a leisurely stroll, both ways.
