Great but standard

Reviewed By 86vaibhava

If you are coming to the Serengeti and staying at the Four Seasons, you are probably looking for a Four Seasons experience, which this property certainly delivers. It's a standard luxury experience - spacious rooms, American-ized food, and good service. If you are looking for a truly once-in-lifetime experience, I would recommend staying at a boutique or tented camp experience. Rooms at the Four Seasons are very comfortable and the view of the plains from each room is incredible. We saw lions, zebra, warthogs, and baboons straight from our window - incredible. Hard to say if the location is good or not since the Serengeti is so large and you will spend lots of time driving on any game drive. Food and service were what you would expect. The one thing I always dislike at hotels like this is the tipping culture. It's very unclear how tips should be handled and it makes every interaction with staff feel transactional. I'm in the middle of the Serengeti - I didn't bring a ton of small dollar bills with me and I don't want to think about tipping for service every minute of my stay. The hotel should just clarify upfront that you can tip en masse at the end or just include tips in the cost of staying. If you're looking for a familiar, luxury experience, this is great. If you want something unique or with more local culture, you can do better.

Elewana Kilindi Zanzibar

Kilindi Zanzibar, comprising of a series of white-domed Pavilion guest rooms all set in 50 acres of lush tropical gardens, is a rarity in the world of luxury boutique hotels. Originally designed for Benny Andersson - one of the members of the 1970's pop group ABBA - Kilindi is a true blend of the very best of diverse cultures to be found in Tanzania and on its adjacent island of Zanzibar. Kilindi achieves the perfect marriage between Scandinavian minimalism and the dramatic architectural overtones of Middle Eastern heritage, whilst encouraging an open, 'back-to-nature' ambiance throughout. In each of the Pavilion suites, white wooden-slatted shutters embrace wide-arched glassless windows each affording spectacular views over the Indian Ocean. This same openness allows the gentle ocean breeze to waft throughout each of the rooms and carry with it the delightful soundtrack of Kilindi's colourful birdlife. Any stay at Kilindi will be a delight for the senses.

Favorite Place in Tanzania

Reviewed By Josh C

We just spent two weeks in Tanzania and our four days at Matemwe were our favorite. The rooms were super clean, spacious, and with spectacular views. The meals were amazing (dinner on the beach, bbq buffet, superb fresh fish and fruit...). The snorkeling was perhaps the best I have experienced and swimming with a pod of 18 dolphins is something we will all remember forever. But what made the visit were the people. The staff was unbelievably attentive and kind. We were so sad to leave!

A beautiful place with the most compassionate team you could ask for!

Reviewed By KatelynH8410

Stella Maris is both a beautiful place serving a phenomenal cause, and a place that you can stay that you will know you are taken care of, even in an emergency situation. I arrived at Stella Maris in advance of my Kilimanjaro trek with Peak Planet. Shortly after arriving (within hours actually), I came down with a fever, and it went downhill from there. Turns out, I caught a nasty virus prior to leaving the States and it kicked in full gear after the long thirty hour journey and it was prepared to take me down completely. I had never traveled internationally before, I was traveling alone, and I was scared to death. It was not something I was prepared for. I was not climbing anywhere at that point, but I was more concerned with the fact that I was ill and not getting better. I didn't know when I would get better, when I would be able to travel home, or what I was even supposed to do if I needed to get to a hospital immediately. Teddy and the team at Stella Maris saved my life. I had a fever that wasn't going down, I was very dehydrated, and it was only getting worse. Instead of leaving me to my own demise as many other places would have, they cared about me and my health. They checked on me, made sure I got to the clinic and got the medical treatment I desperately needed, and more importantly, I was terrified and Teddy stayed with me whole way. I never felt alone, and I knew the whole time that if something were to happen, they would have found me and gotten me medical attention before it got really bad. They made sure I had food to fit my strange new diet and that I ate, made sure I had tea and water, and just generally made sure I didn't feel alone or hopeless. I don't think I've ever been that scared before, especially with two children at home waiting for me, but at the end of every day, I knew Teddy and the rest of the team at Stella Maris had my back and would make sure I made it home to my children. I will be forever greatful for them and the care and compassion they showed me. There aren't many places that will do that, but Stella Maris and their team did, and I will forever be greatful for them. Not only are they amazing to their guests, but they serve a beautiful cause by using the money earned from the hotel to fund a school on the lodge grounds that provides education to children who otherwise may not have access to it. As a mother myself, it was an absolute joy to hear children playing and singing outside every morning. Ensuring children get a quality education in Tanzania is very important, and Stella Maris is improving the lives of the children in their community and it's absolutely beautiful what they do. While driving past the school, the children smile, wave, and give high-fives, and you can just see how thrilled they are to be able to go to school there, and it's thanks to the incredible work of the people at Stella Maris I cannot recommend another lodge over Stella Maris, in Tanzania or anywhere else, because there is no place else that will provide the same quality of care and compassion while simultaneously giving to a beautiful cause. The lodge itself is paradise, the hotel is very clean and comfortable, and all the members of their team are kind and welcoming. If you ever need a place to stay, go to Stella Maris. You will not be disappointed in the slightest and will leave thinking of when you can come back.

Pretty much overrated

Reviewed By Jonas N

The location of the lodge is the only advantage of this accommodation. The staff was more or less friendly, the room was alright. Free shuttle to the airport /10 minutes drive. The building is not to clean and the food in the restaurant was poor. The price is highly over the local Niveau. Breakfast box was poor.
