We got a really warm welcome from our young host when we biked in. Colonial had everything cyclists need - good bike storage, excellent showers, heaps of room for wrangling panniers and everything for cold beers or hot tea. Highly recommeded.

Very Disappointing

Reviewed By Torana2

On check in we were advised of an upgrade to a deluxe room, which we thought was very nice. After entering the deluxe room and putting our bags away when found there was no shower curtain in the bathroom, which we requested. We then settled in and to out dismay had to clean all surfaces of dust build up and cup circles for the bed side tables. I understand the last few years have been difficult for the tourism industry, but there is absolutely no excuse for supplying a room that house keeping has not checked/cleaned before your guests arrive to check inn.

We arrived at Twizel Central, after cycling from Tekapo, on the A2O trail. This Motel is delightful, has so much character as appears to be a wing of the Motelier’s home set in a lovely garden. Although the owners were away, we were given a phone number to ring, to check in and locate our key. Our every need was catered for, in this lovely homely boutique style motel.

Pukaki Air Lodge

Pukaki Air Lodge is a purpose-built five bedroom lodge, positioned in a unique location on Pukaki Airfield (2km north of Twizel). Opened in October 2018, the lodge is specifically built to appeal to Alps-to-Ocean cyclists, touring aviators and visitors to the Mackenzie basin, and offers easy access to the many activities on offer in this lovely part of the South Island. The lodge is incorporated into our hangar where our Nanchang aircraft lives and interested guests may view this plane on request. Guests will wake up to uninterrupted views of the Mackenzie Basin, and can indulge in coffee on the veranda outside each room with views to Aoraki Mt Cook in the North. The Lodge is built right at the end of the Pukaki Airport Runway, so those who are interested in aviation have a perfect vantage point from which to watch takeoffs and landing of the aircraft that use the airfield by day. There are often gyrocopters, biplanes and your hosts own Nanchang Warbird flying around. Guests can take joyrides or scenic flights in these aircraft on request, giving further unique views of the mountains and many surrounding lakes. By night, with no traffic or light pollution the clear views of the brilliant stars of the Mackenzie dark sky reserve can be gazed at in absolute peace and tranquility
