Golden Rock Inn

Gentle trade winds and dramatic Caribbean vistas set the stage for a visit to Golden Rock Inn. A former sugar estate dating back to the early 1800's, the property has been thoughtfully restored through the eyes of New York artists Helen and Brice Marden. Set on 100 acres stretching up the slopes of Nevis Peak, this boutique property has eleven guest rooms and private cottages, including the unique Sugar Mill Suite. Surrounded by lush tropical gardens designed by the owners with Miami landscape architect Raymond Jungles, the inn is an escape embraced with birds' songs and the rustling of bamboo. Guest rooms have either king or twin beds, which can be joined together to create a king. The unique Sugar Mill Suite has an oversized king bed upstairs, with full bath, and 2 twins downstairs with full bath. This accomodation is suitable for 3 adults or 2 adults and 2 children.

The property is beautiful, and the employees are nice but service is lacking. No one seems to communicate or know the schedule of the events requiring at least 24 hrs notice. We expressed our frustrations and received an amenity but the situation remained the same. Cjaye at rentals was amazing and the candle class was great. We ordered room service every day and they all went above and beyond even after hours. Tyrese was the best server we had the whole time. On 6/6 we needed to schedule a COVID test Front desk and concierge DO NOT Answer the the phone and room service had to help us because they were the only ones to respond. I was not emailed or notified about a scheduled test until 10:30pm the night before the appointment which was at 8:30 a.m. On 6/5 I had a scheduled cabana from 10a-6. My group showed up at 11am and nothing was prepared and the employees were unaware of our reservation. The cooler in the cabana had old drinks and ice. We were also not served the full package promised on our reservation until 12pm after asking the server multiple times. Our last day while lounging at the pool after watching multiple people get service, we walked to the bar and asked if we would could have service as well to no avail. We waited over 30 minutes for chips and dip, and had to continue to walk to the bar for refills and close our tab. The aforementioned candle class was a delight, and we were told we would receive them at check out. Reception seemed over eager to check us out even though it was not busy at that time and we had to ask our taxi driver to take us back to get them. The restaurants are ok at best, but service is slow and inattentive. I was so excited to come here but I wish I had stayed at the Marriott. This is not the quality I expected from a park hyatt.

Lovely hotel where the service really makes the experience - everybody is lovely and willing to help out. 10 mins walk from Timothy beach which is pleasant and lots of places to eat in the vicinity. Pool looks small but is warmed by the sun and can be fun especially as it’s usually empty. Splash food is good and includes fresh pizza. Stayed in a 2 bed apartment with a kitchenette and sofa / tvs within - lovely views from balcony over the hills. Would stay again for sure.

Nice Visit - Don't Need to Go Back

Reviewed By Cheaky44

This was our first trip to St. Kitts and we stayed at the Marriott Resort & Royal Beach Casino on points. I booked our 5 night stay in an O/V room and we used SNA’s to upgrade to a 1-bedroom suite. We arrived at St. Kitts Airport, deplaned outside and walked over to the area where there were 2 arrival gates and 2 baggage claim areas. Bags came out in a timely manner, went through immigration and walked outside to catch a taxi. The taxi was $23 USD and took no more than 10-15 minutes to get to the hotel. Upon arrival we were greeted by Tony who took our bags and waited while we checked in. Joshua was behind the desk and went over our Elite options for our stay, gave us 2 bottles of water, room keys and we were on our way. There were 2 elevators for the right wing and 2 for the left wing of rooms; 1 of the elevators was out of service due to renovations on our side. We stayed on the 5th floor (top floor) and walked into a somewhat recently renovated suite. Our room was over-looking the main pool and we had a great view of the ocean and mountains to the side. The room itself had a full living room, small dining room with a small fridge and 1.5 bathrooms that were good size. There was also 2 sets of sliding glass doors to the balcony which had 4 rattan chairs and 2 small tables. The AC was set to 66 degrees when we walked in and we thought we wouldn’t keep it that cool while we were there but we actually did. It ran almost constantly the entire time and kept most of the humidity out. The construction that was going on while we were there wasn’t a big deal in our opinion and you didn’t really hear anything. The bed was super comfortable and we never had a back-ache the entire trip. Housekeeping came daily and did a great job so we tipped her daily. The fridge came in very handy to keep juice/milk cold but didn’t use it for much else. Ice makers on every other floor and provided full buckets of ice – they were never empty. Nobody approached us to attend a timeshare which we were happy about. The hotel itself is very long and runs parallel with the beach. The timeshare units (MVC) were spaced around all 3 of the pools and situated between the hotel and the beach. There was a “stage” in the pool-deck area but they never had anything going on. Every night we came back after dinner, it was completely quiet outside – absolutely NOTHING going on and no music to be heard anywhere outside. One night there was a singer in the lobby bar area but you couldn’t hear her outside. The beach area was terrible and probably the worst beach we’ve ever been on. I don’t know about you, but we really enjoy walking on the beach for about an hour after breakfast before we camp out at the pool. Well, not here. When you are standing on the beach facing the water, you cannot go past the chairs on the right side because you hit rocks and a solid fence. If you go to the left side, you can walk about 6 minutes to the end of their property line before you run into so much seaweed that you are afraid to walk through the mass/in addition to the terrible smell coming from it. The seaweed in the water seems to change/shift each day but again, there’s so much of it you cannot walk into the water, at least that’s what it was like when we were there. You look at the water and it looks black because of how much seaweed is in there. We watched the guys try cleaning most of it up and hauling it away in 8 wheel-barrels but it was all back the next morning. Huge disappointment for us. The resort did have about 75 palapa like/wood & metal parasol covers on the beach that each had 4 sun loungers around them spaced nicely apart from one another but we only saw about 10 of them being used at most. We stayed on the beach instead of the pool area because there was a gorgeous breeze. When we went up to the pool deck on the first day, there was almost no breeze which made it almost unbearable for us to be up there not to mention the old and worn sun loungers that seen better days. Even walking across the deck you ended up sweating like crazy! COVID test were scheduled for us and we received an email the day before indicating what time they booked our appointment. Each test is $70 USD per person and put on our room bill, our appointment was at 9:30 am and we received our results at 6:30 pm the same day. Everyone was friendly at the hotel and we enjoyed ourselves. It was hot and humid every day and only drizzled 1 time. We felt very safe walking outside of the resort to dinner each night. Never went into the casino so I can’t speak on that. The resort is definitely in need of an over-haul as it’s tired and worn. I know they are trying to update things but IMO they should close it down and do a complete reno job and then re-open. There’s just too much to do to the place to bring it into 2022 but then again, it’s all a matter of opinion and what’s important to each person. Food: The resort was maybe 25% full – very few people there and was under some construction but it didn’t bother us. You could tell that the restaurant ARWEE in the lobby was recently renovated as was Café Calypso and the Calypso Restaurant – modern and fresh looking. We ate dinner our first night at ARWEE and loved the teriyaki salmon and the mango wings were good – not great but good and 3 Tito’s for $31 USD. We had pizza from the pizza shack and thought it was very good for lunch. We never ate at FIRE (steak & seafood), La Cucina (Italian) or the Sushi Bar. We did have coconut shrimp out on the beach from Bohemia which is the beach/pool bar and it was also very good. We had breakfast inside Calypso restaurant one morning and it was also very good. The regular “all-american” breakfast was $28 USD and the full-buffet was $29 USD so it didn’t really make sense to do the all-american when you could do the full breakfast and have all you wanted for $1 more. The Calypso Café had great cranberry muffins, expresso and juice. Small selection of items but everything we had was very good and not expensive. We did go across the street to Sweet & Savory a couple times for breakfast and really enjoyed it. The bacon, egg & cheese sandwich on an english muffin was very filing and full of flavor. We each had one, hubby had an expresso and I had a bottle of water for $27 USD. In the same strip mall you found a small grocery store and we picked up a half-gallon of OJ, milk, lemonade, a bag of kettle chips, a bag of cookies and a gallon of distilled water for $36. We popped in there a couple of times during our stay when we needed something. We went to the sushi place called Rituals that’s literally a 7 minute walk from the hotel and thoroughly enjoyed it. The sushi was freshly made right then and there and just melted in your mouth. Small place with indoor and outdoor seating. We planned on going back on Sunday but found out that everything is closed on Sunday nights. We went to Marshall’s at 6 pm another night for dinner without a reservation and was able to be seated right away. They seemed a little “put-off” that we didn’t have a reservation, but there were at least 20 open tables. Our server was very nice and attentive but at first seemed to push us for our orders. After she asked the third time, we politely told her we weren’t ready to order yet and she backed off. However, after we told her this, the manager came to our table and asked us how our appetizers (crab cakes and coconut shrimp) were. Slightly taken aback, we told him they were very good and he said he hoped we enjoyed our entrees as well. Just seemed a little weird to us that he would say that and stop by our table 3 times during the evening. I had the beef medallion and hubby had rack of lamb – both of which were very good. Two things that were wrong about dinner was when they asked us if we wanted regular water or sparkeling, we said regular water. What they DIDN’T tell you was they charged you $10 for a bottle of water to sit at your table. The other thing was the drinks were very weak. I had 3 cosmos and my husband had 3 martini’s – we should have been staggering when we walked out but neither of us were. I even asked to make my cosmo stronger and NOTHING changed. Disappointed to say the least. Dinner was $198 USD. We also went to Rock Lobster on Saturday night for their special. We started off with conch chowder that was excellent and some warm garlic bread. The second course was half of a lobster and half-slab of ribs for me and half of a lobster and fish for the hubby. In addition to this, they included a mound of dirty rice, small mashed-potatoes, cole-slaw, salad, small piece of corn-on-the-cob and a plantain – all of this for $100 EC which is $37 USD. There’s no way we could possibly eat that much food but everything we had was very good. On Sunday’s the only place you’ll be able to have dinner is “on the strip” as everything else is closed with the exception of a pizza place that’s on the road before you get to the strip. So, on Sunday we decided to take a cab down to Cathy’s for dinner. Taxi was $10 USD each way from hotel. The strip is literally shack after shack after shack on the beach that is comprised of bars and restaurants. We were a little hesitant to go since a friend told us she was disappointed but we were greatly surprised. There are 3 picnic tables on the beach, 4 tables on the deck and about 7 tables inside the shack to sit at. The place is run by Cathy and her husband, who’s name escapes me right now. We started with the rum punch which was super fresh, light and sweet. Unfortunately, I found out rum gives me an awful headache so I couldn’t finish my drink – but hubby did! Word to the wise, they’re strong so be careful. LOL The lobster ($60 for 2 full tails) and shrimp dinner was outstanding and I enjoyed every single bite. I’ve never had lobster that was so tender in my life – amazing. My husband had the jerk chicken and it was incredibly tasty. Albeit expensive for 2 pieces of chicken ($14 for a drumstick and thigh), it was very good. In addition to the entrée, they also served you another full plate that included plantains, mixed vegetable medley, a small salad, rice and some potato salad. Again, you cannot eat everything because there’s so much but it was soooo good. We were very happy we decided to give it a try. Overall we made it a great vacation and all of the food was excellent. Now that we've been to this resort, we have no need to go back. There are other places that we would look at first.

We knew there was renovations in progress but NEVER saw or heard a noise. The staff was completely knowledgeable ands very customer service oriented. Never saw anyone without a smile on their faces.
