Hotel Maximillian

Probably the best spa/massage option at Tj Balai

Reviewed By invisible999

This is the review not about hotel/rooms but rather the spa/massage facility at the second floor. Now, at Tanjung Balai you _can_ get 1h body massage at local shops for something like 60K IDR, but I would not advise you to do it, because professionalism of local masseuses is very low, let's speak honestly - non existent. Now at Maximilian 1h body massage would cost twice as much but at least you probably will get the best (corrected to the localion) quality in the whole island. If you go with the traditional Indonesian massage, Maximillian's masseuses do know their business quite well and you won't be disappointed. A separate note - I am not a big proponent giving tips to service personal but considering the price (120K IDR per hour) and the fact that masseuse will only get fraction of that rate, if you've been satisfied with the result, give some money to them. They deserved it. Additional plus - you can pay for the massage/spa with a credit card at hotel's lobby.

Karimun City Hotel

Probably the best hotel is the town

Reviewed By invisible999

This is excellent budget hotel for the locations. You probably understand that by paying $30/night you are not getting Hilton or Marriott. So adjust your expectations for the whole island and the town accordingly. But this cute hotel is surprisingly good. First, location - it is right outside (about 100m) from the ferry terminal. It is also slightly away from the busy town streets so you won't be exposed to the busy street noise all the time. Rooms are quite small - the Superior Room barely has the space for bed. There is not even clothing rack and TV (never turned it on) is hanging from the wall. But it has nice bed and clean sheets, hot running water and toiletries, disposable slippers and local 3-in-1 coffee and water cattle. Plus you have (very small) balcony literally above the water. You can sit there and watch ships go by and listen sound of waves... (well, assuming that no one is burning trash nearby at the same time...) Couple words about staff - very friendly and do try to help you. They can book for you a local car with driver so you can navigate the town and island, can suggest where to eat and where to go for shopping or massage. While local younger staff has some difficulty with English, manager Anjelyn speaks excellent English so take all your questions to her. One critical point to mention - while booking usually comes with breakfast and dinner (!) included, you would be much better to skip both and head to town where much better options are available. Because there is not much choice except white rice and equally tasteless overly oily fried noodles. I hope management will read this and if they can't find someone who can cook, better to outsource this process to one of well-known local restaurants.

Lumayan

Reviewed By Meyer75

Holiday Karimun Hotel

Partially renovated!

Reviewed By Reg_Cheong

Very convenient location, right outside the ferry terminal. We had a couple of room combinations - twin rooms, deluxe (triple sharing) and a suite room. Rooms on Level 2 are nicely renovated and have a modern feel, third level rooms are still old and dated. Suite is extremely big with a living/common area for gatherings. Shampoo and shower gel are available upon requests too. Downside - There's no lift, so groups with elderly might need to climb up and down, the breakfast... just go out for breakfast. Just across the hotel is a Bak Kut Teh shop that serves excellent food. Go for it (the dry one is awesome!) Money changer just opposite the hotel too with a convenience shop (provision shop) right next to it. Oh and there's no hair dryer in the normal rooms so you might want to bring along one if you have. Hair dryer is available in the suite rooms but it's attached to the bathroom.

Balai View Hotel

Short getaway from city.

Reviewed By Emirrul R

Karimun island is an undeveloped island with beautiful scenery of forest, mountain ( Mount Agung ), water fall, natural beaches and Tanjung Balai ( Habour town ). I stayed at Balai view for 2D1N. This place I stumble by accident. As I did my homework reading review by trip adviser says Hotel Maximilian has a karaoke room which are noise and disturb hotel guest and then Hotel Aston also noisy due to their in-house disco entertainment. So this hotel is not only within town area (near) the cleanliness and the facility provide by the hotel is good and clean. Our room is spacious. People says this hotel towel is yellowish in color, well, I find that not true. Aircon in the room is cold, and the cable TV is good. Of course the staff is friendly and helpful. While you were there, you can try the chicken rice, can find it at Jalan Setia Budhi the shop call Ah Hock chicken rice stall. (Tanjung Balai) Price is economy and taste is superb ?. Beside chicken rice, quite many Nasi Padang in Tanjung Balai... the one restaurant that look good and aircon is Restaurant Sederhana. Located at Jalan Lingkar ( you can google it ). But I didn’t eat there though. There are lots of hotel, motel and inn at the Tanjung Balai. If, I am not mistaken there are 44 hotel at this small place. Why ? Because lot of people come here for cheap food and massage. Quite many massage place. Last thing I head people also come here for sex business, a lot here but you can see them in broad daylight. Lastly I hope my review can help you with some pointer to come this place.

Cheap And Decent Hotel

Reviewed By GSK_Pharma

This is one of the popular hotels for foreign and Singaporean tourists. This hotel is very cheap and decent. The hotel room is quite comfortable and walking distance to eateries and as well as street food stalls. There is a small shoppng mall about 20 minutes walk away. I will recommend this place if you are looking for a cheap stay.It is definitely worth the stay and price for a 2-3* hotel. Not sure whether the hotel comes with complimentary breakfast as I prefer having road side food and the flexibility of looking for my own food.

This hotel is not 'grand', very poor service

Reviewed By doublej783

Booked a deluxe superior room (the expensive room) via hotels.com, because we wanted to take the ferry from Tanjung Balai to Malaysia. The hotel offers a discount of 50% for 1 night if you take the ferry. Although paying by cash and the ferry ticket office next door claiming that we would be eligible for the discount, the hotel refused. The reason: we should first have bought the ferry ticket. Besides this: the first day we arrived: the bed sheets were dirty (fresh coffee stains, etc.); sheets were replaced, then we found out that the pillow sheets were also dirty. On one pillow sheet we even had a dirty footprint. Also floor not clean. The offered another room: even worse: the bed sheet was dirty with stains you don't want to know what I think it was. We took back the first room en requested them to clean and replace the sheets. We stayed for two nights. The wifi speed is sometimes too slow for streaming video. Horrible thing: every 5-15 minutes your wifi connection expires, even when browsing the internet, requiring you to retype the login name and password every time! Besides this the login/password changes every 24 hours and you don't know when. In the two days we were there, the key card to our room was not working for two times. According to the website toiletries are provided, however we only had a set of toiletries for 1 person, and it was soap to wash your hands with; we didn't bother to report this anymore. Staff did not apologize for anything. I believe the problem of the hotel is bad management. The reception/house holding staff seemed friendly, but are inexperienced and not well-trained. There's for sure no quality checks on the rooms. The two deluxe superior rooms we saw are in the middle of the building and do not have windows. The room we stayed in was located on the same floor as the conference/party rooms, and party noise travelled to our room. The only good things: bathroom was clean. Breakfast is from 6 to 10, but at 9 all the food is cold (they don't cover the pans of the buffet). We saw someone walking around and doing checks for the food, but only by eye. Breakfast buffet variation is average, but a common thing as eggs is missing. The interior design of the restaurant is nice. This hotel is certainly not 'grand', except for the price/quality-ratio. The price of the deluxe superior room for about US$ 40 is quite expensive for this town in Indonesia, but the the hotel performs way below 3 stars (I would rate it a 1 star at the most at this moment). We will never stay there again, and I advice you to skip it if you can. Maybe better options in Kisaran. The problem is that this hotel is the only hotel in reasonable vicinity of the city center and ferry ticket office. If you need to stay there, just take a cheaper room, do not pay in advance or by credit card and first check the room, sheets, etc.
