A Hotel of Contrasts

Reviewed By John H

The Skybay Hotel at Gyeongpo is one of the hotels built in the lead up to the 2018 Winter Olympics, so it is still quite new. All of the rooms have amazing views, either of the ocean or of Gyeongpo lake and the mountains to the west. The view and location of the hotel are amazing, the beach is a thirty second walk from the hotel back entrance. This last visit was with my wife and infant daughter and the hotel offers several amenities: a crib, a sterilizer, and the like, and that was nice. The beds are also comfortable and the bathroom was clean, and also had decent water pressure as well as a good range in water temperature. The staff at the hotel were nice and helpful as you could expect. The hallmark of this hotel is the roof infinity pool on the 20th floor, my wife and I had been once before in the summer time and it is nice (if a bit crowded) and to my surprise the pool was open on January 1st, and it is in face heated so that is a nice touch. However, access to the pool is not free to hotel guests, or a reduced rate, 30,000 won per person can add up in a hurry and in all honesty it is not that big of a pool. There isn’t much else to do except lounge around and splash a bit. Also (here come the negatives) the walls of the rooms are not very soundproof, we could hear other guests from either side of us, as well from the hallway and I know they heard our baby when she was crying. The elevators are a complete joke as well, they work but with only three elevators for each tower it is always a wait for a elevator. And if it is during a busier time of day (like 11 AM ) then the elevator will be full, and you have to wait more. The average wait time for an elevator was a little less than five minutes by my estimate. Since I was waiting for so long I was able to spend some time and look and think at the glassed off room next to the elevators, and I realized that there were going to be an additional four (or more) elevators for the tower. That would have helped immensely ease our experience, I do not know the reason why they didn’t finish installing the remaining elevators (the decision was made after construction was already a fair ways along, or else they could done anything else) but the elevators alone are a reason for one star being taken off from this review.

Good base for skiing

Reviewed By nicoleke

Located approximately 10 minutes' drive from Yangpyong and 5 minutes' drive from Alpensia, this Ramada is a functional base for skiing in the area. The rooms are a little strange, as many of them have a loft area that can accommodate Korean-style floor mattresses in addition to the hotel beds. This is great for families with older, school-age kids, though not really suitable for babies/toddlers. They advertise a kitchenette, but you can't really use it, so don't count on it. The hotel is a bit far from the main drag of Pyeongchang, but it has several restaurants on the basement level, as well as a well-stocked CU and an arcade that's great for older kids (and kids at heart). The best thing is that there's a ski rental place right in the lobby. The staff there are terrific, the prices on rentals are very competitive and they can arrange for heavily discounted lift tickets. The hotel staff are pretty helpful, but the service is nothing to write home about. This hotel feels like it was hastily built ahead of the Olympics, and will be totally shabby in about 10 years' time. But for now, it's pretty nice and clean.

Great location, well priced, good service - highly recommend

Reviewed By ngsosu

We enjoyed our stay here in December 2021. The location is super convenient if you want to ski at Alpensia (a novice to intermediate level ski mountain). Staying at the hotel also nets you 30% off of lift tickets and equipment rental. The staff is really helpful and the rooms were well kept and nice. It’s pretty awesome to look out your windows and see the skiers quipping down the mountain. The location is also great to the restaurant offerings- many within walking distance. If you want to go to a Slightly more challenging ski mountain, there is another right down the road within a five minute drive.

Splurge night!

Reviewed By Yiotula

We stayed in one of the pool rooms and it was fantastic. A bit of a splurge but a fun treat. They don't let you cook in the room even though there is a kitchenette. Also, in the spring the AC wasn't on and so we had to leave the door open, would be very dangerous with small children sleeping with ready access to the pool..,

Better than expected

Reviewed By John H

The Naksan Beach Hotel was much better than I had expected, I used to live in YangYang and I knew the hotel as being in a beautiful location, but run down. They've remodeled it somewhat recently and it's pretty nice. I would strongly recommend that you get at least a second floor ocean view room. We got a junior suite on the fourth and the view is excellent, I'm sure the 'mountain view' is fine, but you just see the trees on the hillside, not any mountains. The breakfast buffet has a mix of Korean and western style food options, nothing amazing but nice and filling, I had a good experience with all the staff workers here. The parking lot is a bit small for the amount of cars though, and there is a public lot just outside of the hotel that is filled with people going to the nearby temple. As such there can be a line of cars waiting on the small road to the hotel during the day, it wasn't a big issue for me,but I felt it should be noted for others.

Dilapidated Mold Infested Hotel!

Reviewed By Jet701967

I gave it two stars since the location is walking distance from the beautiful trails. There are too many negatives though and would highly suggest looking elsewhere! Our room had numerous insects in it, stains on the carpet, peeling wallpaper, black mold in the washroom, and a musty old smell. The beds were extremely hard and uncomfortable so we had a restless night. To make matters worse you can hear every noise from neighbours and in the hall since the walls are paper thin! The food at the breakfast buffet was unmemorable but the selection was good; however, even the main dining area had dust everywhere, it was generally a very dusty hotel!! Also, the hotel ran out of soap!!!! EWWW! The main washroom had no soap, luckily I do carry around hand sanitizer! Go elsewhere, trust me!!

A total disappointment

Reviewed By L-Sihui

We stayed with the hotel for 02 nights from 24 - 26 December 2017 during the Christmas period. We were looking forward to an enjoyable stay, as it's the holiday season and there must be a handful of activities to look forward. Traveling to the hotel from Seoul is not as bad as you would have thought, it was relatively easy. We took a train from cheongnyangni station, which took us around 4 hours to reach Gohan Station and waited for the shuttle bus to bring us to the hotel. Please bear in mind, the shuttle schedule you see on their website IS NOT VALID. Refer to the ones pasted at the bus stop or the hotel pamphlets. Upon arrival, check in was effortless, when we arrived at our room, the room was cool and looks really great. The horror only happened after leaving our rooms and upon returned.. 1. F&B outlets are all FULL. The concierge tells every foreign guest who came to them to wait for a seat, whereby the restaurant staff says there's no seats for 24th and 25th. Internal communication dude. Its 8pm and you can't tell your hungry guest to wait for a seat when there would never be one in any of your main restaurants. Upset and angry guests left the concierge and search for their own food, including us. 2. The room was very stuffy and on the aircon panel was showing 26 degrees. Nobody sleeps in a 26 degrees rooms dude. I was so upset after several tries and called the front desk. The housekeeping guy came, tested and obviously he knows that the aircon is SPOILT, as there's no air coming out from the vents! Instead of telling us that we could have done a room change or something, he immediately push the blame saying it's winter and they don't have aircon. Please tell me, who in the right mind would give you a room with no windows during winter? So you're telling your guest, me, that i have to pay close to 400 per night to sleep in a 26 degrees room, whereby your the corridor and lift landings are much much much cooler? He even brought me a small fan which DO NOT HELP AT ALL. With much dismay, i head down to the front desk and requested for a room change. The guy at the front desk told me that there's no aircon during winter, same thing, i told him that no guest in the right mind would sleep in a room like this and mind you, i've stayed at High 1 a few years ago and we could toggle the aircon and control the room's temperature. So don't try to brush it off. He called the manager and came back to tell me the same thing all over again. But i'm sorry, I do not accept that as i'm also from the hospitality sector. This is totally not acceptable, you can't have your guest sleeping in such a room and no guest would accept it. You jolly well do what you need to do. After much "internal discussions" between the few front desk staff and emphasizing the hotel is full (which i dont care, because you're supposed to resolve my issue), they reluctantly changed my room and kept telling me its a upgrade from my current room. To be frank, I DONT REALLY CARE IF IT'S A UPGRADE, i just needed a room with king bed and a working aircon :) Thank god that the aircon worked in our new room, but we had another issue, the aircon stops functioning and turns off on its own every 1 - 2 hours. I was woken up by the stuffiness in the middle of the night a couple of times. We were too exhausted and decided to live with it till check out. 3. Other than signboards in foreign language, even the schedules of shows and activities are in KOREAN. Great job guys, it shows that your hotel do not value your foreign guest who are staying with you. 4. The staff are courteous BUT they don't really understand well. It can be quite frustrating to repeat yourself time and again and eventually some foreigners gave up and walked away. All in all, if you would ask me, i wouldn't recommend this ski resort. There are plenty options to choose from and are much closer to Seoul. This stay was a total disappointment!

Recent business hotel in the center of Donghae

+ The hotel is quite recent, clean and well situated. Rooms are spacious and well equiped. There is also a restaurant we didn't try. - We paid extra for a room with ocean view and the only window on the room is about 1.6m high, so you don't ever see the ocean, unless you just stand next to the window. That's a shame.

I stayed here for about 3 weeks during a cable loading job. The hotel can be recommended. It has clean rooms and friendly staff. The location is good with nearby shops and restaurants. The hotel is European like style and has a good breakfast as well. The hotel has an Italian restaurant onsite with okay food. The sunny courtyard is very nice too. I will stay here next time.
